My Life

May 27, 2009

Well let me start off by saying this has been a long journey.

I started out as a child very active and was somewhat of a Tomboy....loving to climb trees, ride bikes, play basketball, etc.  When I hit about 11 I started not being as active outside other than riding my bike and I started to notice changes in my activity.  Through my teenage years I gained weight and was always bigger than my friends and "Aunt Flow" never came to visit regularly.  I had seen the Dr. for my physical each year but they never showed much concern about "Aunt Flow"  not being regular.  I then got married in Sept. 2002 to the best man ever and was ready to start a family and enjoy married life.  We tried for months to no avail to become pregnant and I started to get concerned after about 8 months.  I saw my Dr. who started running some tests and determined that I needed to see an OBGYN.  I saw an OBGYN who diagnosed me with PCOS and started me on Clomid.  I did Clomid, to the highest dosage for about 1 1/2 yrs.  I got pregnant on the highest dose of Clomid but miscarried shortly after.  I was very discouraged and hurt that I was going through this.  We put it off and decided to just enjoy each other and if it happens it happens.  Off and On I would want to try again but we were unsuccessful.  I had contemplated WLS but I was on my husband's insurance and they told us ABSOLUTELY under no circumstances would they cover it...

I went to my OBGYN again last year to do some further testing and treatment to help us conceive.  He sent me to the Duke Fertility Specialist who discussed my conditions and PCOS.  He started me on Metformin and we did a round of fertility injections.  The injections did not work and I still did not produce even 1 healthy egg.  I was again very disturbed/discopuraged

He discussed my options and my weight which is a big hindrance of my health and PCOS symptoms.  He suggested that I lose weight which is better for me and a baby.  He indicated that weight loss with PCOS is nearly impossible without some kind of help.  I went to my Physician again and he recommended RnY for this and stated that it will correct most if not ALL my PCOS symptoms and I would be healthier and fertile afterwards.  Still I was on my husband's insurance who stated NO yet again.

Then I had a breakthrough, I was offered a new job at a new company
I reviewed the insurance coverage at my new job and not only do they cover Fertility treatment but they also cover Bariatric Surgery and there is no grace period but insurance coverage starts the day I started my job.  I started my new job in March and discussed my desire to have RnY with my team and my boss who was 100% supportive and did not even blink that I had only been with the company less than a month.

I started my PreOp appointments and attended the seminar in April.  I saw the surgeon in May and had all my required PreOp procedures done when I went to him thanks to my Physicians assistance.  I found out last week that BCBSNC has approved my sugery and I have now scheduled my surgery.  I have been heavy for most of my life and I am looking so forward to being able to shop with the girls again and starting a family with my husband.

My Surgery is scheduled for July 1st at 9am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will keep you posted on my New Beginning!!
