I had my surgery (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or VSG) on Monday, July 11, 2011. Although I started to look into WLS back in the summer of 2010, I knew with my crazy schedule (Full-time work, part-time doctoral student, church youth leader, typical familial roles, etc.), that this surgery needed to wait until I was sure that time to recover. Now, I sit here boggled at the fact that the surgery is complete and I have no regrets.I am very blessed to have a supportive family who stood behind me 100% as I made this life-changing decision. I also experience only mild pain, nausea, and no adverse reactions to anesthesia. My admission and discharge to the hospital ran like clock-work. The only issue that I encountered was discomfort from gas pain/pressure. Sleeping through the night and maintaining hydration was also a challenge for the first few days/nights/
I am almost 1 week post-op and still have minor gas pains, but I'm sure it will pass. My highest recorded weight was 2 weeks prior to surgery at my pre-admission testing at the hospital (360 lbs.) On the day of surgery, I went down to 353 and now (almost 1 week post-op) my weight is 345.
I know that this is going to be a tough journey, but I am not one to shy away from challenges. I know that with the grace and guidance I get from the Lord Almighty, will prove this new chapter in my life to be exhilarating!
