I have had a weight problem my entire life.  My mother was super morbidly obese from my earliest memory, and my grandmother thought food was the answer to all lifes problems (and BTW used lard and fried just about everything)!   When I went out on my own in college I decided I'd had enough of being FAT -- so I stopped eating (almost literally) and lost 75 pounds.  I damaged my health not to mention doing a number on my metabolism -- and I kept my size 4 for about 3 days.   My body seemed to fight to get every pound back, and as I left college for a sedentary job I gradually lost the fight until I was twice the size I should be and was squeezing into a size 24.  I'm really Blessed to have a loving supportive husband whom I adore -- but I hated the fact that I was so heavy and it started impacting my life (tennis now hurt my knees, extender belts on airplanes, etc.).  We are a military (retired) family -- and when my doctor had to put me on blood pressure medicine she asked if I'd like a referral to discuss weight loss surgery.  I had determined that the Roun en Y was too drastic, but in Apr 07 the Lap Band became available.  I was one of the first in line!

I had my surgery on 3 Jul 07 and have to say that the first 3 weeks were a misery.  I had my gall bladder removed at the same time that the band was inserted.  The surgery itself was no problem -- but the pain medication made me queasy -- so in my husband's words "I John Wayne'd it" and never used any pain meds.  At first I had trouble drinking enough to stay hydrated, but that became easier by the day.  I had a couple complications (band slippage) that sent me back to the hospital.  All the saline had to be removed from my Lap Band and within 8 months I had gained all but 7 pounds back.  Eventually my Dr. recommended that the Lap Band be removed and we discussed a DS.  I prayed about it and my surgery was scheduled for 27 Jan 09.

Surgery was completely uneventful (but long 7 1/2 hours) -- I went home in 2 days.  Once again John Wayne'd it through the pain!  Doing great until I caught the flu after returning to work.  Have been suffering with a bacterial overgrowth for 3 weeks at this point.  Looking forward to getting back to the new normal!  Weight loss is impressive -- over 50 pounds in under 3 months.  Can't say I love the DS (yet) but looking forward to the day when I can!
