My decision why I had surgery...

Jan 04, 2009

I have four kids, 11, 9, 7 & 4.  I am always in the car with them taking them to some sort of activity.  We ate out a lot.  And then when I could get away from the kids I was at a restaurant either by myself or with some friends.  This was at least twice a week if not more.  I LOVE FOOD!!!  That is WHY I chose the sleeve.  I weighed 330 lbs on Monday.  I am 37 years old.  I couldn't go on living being so fat but I didn't want to lose my only true love which is food.  I will never go back to eating the way that I did.  But I know with the sleeve I can still enjoy the foods I love with moderation.  This was the perfect surgery for me and even though it's going to take many months before I will be able to enjoy any food, it was the sacrifice that I could make to get this weight off.  I still plan to go out with my friends.  My sister and I went to Applebees 5 days post op.  I had french onion soup and I was happy as a clam.  The pre-op testing was actually covered under my insurance.  But I was waiting for those bills to show up as well.  I am a single mom and I knew I was taking the risk of the rest of my life on the line.  If I get a leak it will most likely financially destroy me but it was a chance I needed to take.  I really couldn't go on with how big I was.  I couldn't be more happy right now.  I also had my gall bladder out at the same time.  I'm waiting for the insurance to deny that as well...keeping my fingers crossed.

My surgery....

Dec 31, 2008

I went in on Monday morning December 29, 2008 at 5:15 am.  My surgery was scheduled for 7:15 am.  I don't remember a whole lot about the surgery.  I remember them putting in my iv's, I remember them stretching my arms straight out from my body, I remember them putting warm blankets on me and I remember them having me breathe into a face mask.  That's it.  I guess after surgery I even had chest x-rays but don't remember that.  I was brought to my room about 12:30 and slept for about 4 hours.  When I finally woke up I felt great and started walking.  I couldn't swallow anything until I had my leak test scheduled for the next day.  I didn't have the leak test until around 12:30 the next day.  That test was the worst thing that I have ever done.  It was the nastiest tasting stuff.  It made me sick for about 4 hours.  After I was able to empty out my stomach I felt much better.  My leak test came back fine.  I was released from the hospital that night at 7:30 pm.  I was pretty tired and came home and went right to bed.  I slept great.  Today is day 2 after surgery and I have been really good.  I haven't had to have any pain medication.  I'm not in pain only slight discomfort.  I drank water most of the morning and tried chicken broth and apple juice this afternoon.  So far no problems at all.

I think this is the best thing that I could've done for myself and I feel like I have a new lease on my life!!
