What a week. Dehydration, Stricture, and Ulcer.

Sep 04, 2010

Its been a very long couple of days…   I just got RNY on 8/10 so, I was a little over three weeks out. I was doing fantastic the first week and a half or so.. Moving around, enjoying what time I had off work thinking this is fantastic!! About week two into the process I was having a really hard time getting in any protein shakes and I couldn’t get down any eggs, cottege cheese or pudding ( I just thought well ill go back to all liquids like soups and water) since I was convinced that I had the stomach that wouldn’t be able to handle anything… I couldn’t even handle soups or water towards the end.   Wednesday I went into the hospital because I had not eaten in days (or drank anything for that matter) and was dizzy. They treated me for dehydration and was in there for a couple hours with a couple bags of fluids later I was allowed to leave because I had a doctors appointment that afternoon to see my surgeon about the whole eating situation.. Being treated by the way for dehydration was embarrassing, because I kept hearing you need to drink your water and I knew this I just couldn’t! By my potassium levels were almost 1 from throwing up for a week (normal levels are 3-5)   I went to my doctors office who pretty much told me he would bet I had a stricture and he wanted to do an endoscopy that day (which was fine I was ready to do anything to start enjoying any sort of food!). I just figured that they would open back up the stricture and I would be sent on my way.. which they tried but they couldn’t all at once so I got admitted to the hospital that Thursday so I could be on fluids (WAS NOT expecting that one). So Friday I had another Endo done and they seem to think they have opened the hole from my new stomach to the new section of the small intestine. I had to stay Friday for more liquids and to make sure things didn’t leak.   Needless to say in short you know your body, if something is wrong don’t wait – call your doctor immediately or go to the ER.

I’m doing great. Once they opened the hole back up I feel like a new person. It can only hopefully get better from here.
