Surgery and 5 days later

Dec 08, 2010

Surgery went well, was a total of 6 1/2 hours until i got to my room.  When I woke up I had just a horrible pain in my chest I thought I was having a heart attack and I could hear this voice.  Susanne, rate your pain 1 - 10 - I told her 11 and I have a high pain tolerance.  I kept hearing her voice telling me to breathe deeper - apparently I'm a shallow breather.  She had to give me 2 more shots of morphine until the pain subsided enough.  Once I was in my room I was only allowed water and chicken broth and they wouldn't let me out of bed.  Next day i got up though.  and to go pee.  Saturday's lunch included  lemon yellow - I took one cube and brought it up.  Nurse insisted on giving me gravol drip and it knocked me out for 3 hours.  I was pretty annoyed cause my family had just gotten there.  Then Sunday for lunch it was creme of cauliflower soup, which normally I like, but I took one sip and seconds later thru up again.  I had the same nurse and this time I wouldn't let her give me the gravol - I was fine in a few minutes.  That soup was horrible.  Have my tastes changed already?  I was supposed to go home sunday but my potassium levels were too low and on saturday they started giving me supplements.  I went home Monday, and hubby had to drive thru that snow storm but we stayed in the city and hit the 401 at yonge.  so it was ok going east.

It was so good to get into my own bed.  I didn't sleep so well the first night I was up every 2 hours, but the next night was good.  I'm going to the doctor tomorrow.  I might go back to work next week - they keep emailing me for help so I might as well be there.

after 1 week of optifast

Nov 21, 2010

It's been 9 days of optifast.  It's been ok but I'm concerned I've only lost 4 lbs.  I think I'm in ketosis but I'm not sure - I have all this energy but it could be just nervous energy?  I dunno.  I have my lists ready to go this weekend and get stuff, vitamins, protien shakes etc.  We're going to get back our membership to Costco so i can get everything in one place.  My arthritis has been really bad the past couple of weeks so I feel less and less motivated to walk more.  It just hurts too much.  Another thing is they increased my cpap setting and if I wake up in the night I don't want it back on for the rest of the night.  I find it irritating so I can't go back to sleep.  Odd.  I'm also not sleeping well and having to get up to pee a couple of times.  the first night of optifast I had to get up 4 times.  wow .  I'm getting anxious, worried about work of course but that's another problem.  I think too because of this nervous energy the dogs are getting on my nerves really fast.  poor things.

a next step

Nov 16, 2010

So Dr Starr's office transferred me to Dr Hagen. I waited a week and called but they hadn't gotten anything yet.  She started asking me questions and I told her my story.  She said she'd talk to one of the dr's and told me to call back the next day. So I called back and she told me she had talked to Dr Hagens secretary and it would be at least January before I could get a date with him, but she had talked to Dr Klein and he was willing to get me in sooner.  So she booked my surgery date of Dec 17 and I was just thrilled.  Hubby went with me to meet him and it's all good.  Finally.

I got a call last thursday but missed it to call the office with the possibility of an earlier date.  So I took it, Dec 3.  I had to start optifast the very next day.  It's been a bit rough I'm on day 4 and still hungry.  I keep trying to drink more water and I'm getting there.

I must be weird cause I don't have to mask the taste of the optifast.  If I get bored with it, I will.

Today's Phone Calls

Oct 12, 2010

After sending another email to Dr Hagen, Christine called me.  She admitted that there was a "glitch" in processing my referral and then again when the fax went from Dr Starr to the clinic.  Oh boy.  And they have totally screwed up my phone numbers - saying it was 705 -should have been 905 area code.  But good news she told me to call Dr Starr's office to make an appointment.  When I did, I discovered THEY had my wrong extension for work.  Oh boy,  I'm really losing confidence in these people.

Oct 11

Oct 11, 2010

Today I'm feeling calmer than I have in weeks - I went to my GP on Friday and drilled him - he's convinced me that Dr Glazer won't deny me.  He went over all my medical problems and told me what he expected Dr Glazer will do and I'm ok with it. I just hope tghat he doesn't send me for too many tests that will delay my surgery.  I've had them all, I know what my problems are and they are monitored by my specialists.  My aneurysm and migraines are managed by my neurologist.  My heart damage and aneurysm is monitored by my cardiologist, who I have great confidence in.  My stomach problems are monitored by me and my GP and if I have great difficulties there I go to the internist.  Severe osteo arthritis and pain is monitored by me and my GP.

My concerns now are pain meds.  I don't really want morphine so I have to talk to them about that.  I can live without the pain meds for arthritis for a couple of weeks after surgery.  I dont' think I'll be walking all that far that fast.

I am disappointed that Dr Hagen's Office Manager never called back, even after leaving another message for her.  Not impressed at all.

it begins

Sep 03, 2010

i decided to start this to keep track of my journey thru this.  I started looking into the surgery after complaining to my cardiologist  that i'm in a circle.  He told me to look into it and would have one of his staff look into it also because he wanted it for other patients.  I found the MIS Group, printed off the forms and called his office.  The girl he had looking into it for him hadn't found what I did.  Anyway, i filled in the forms and faxed it to his office, he signed it, and they faxed it into the bariatric clinic.  It took about a month but I got a confirmation that the forms were received, - it said don't call us, we'll contact you - it takes about 18 months to hear anything from them.  That was in april 2009. ahtat the forms were faxed.  So I expect not to hear anything from them until 2011.  In april 2010 I got a letter with an appointment to see Dr Starr June 15, 2010.  Did that and was told i'd hear from some about the next step, being dietician, social worker.  2 months later, the middle of August  I had heard nothing, so I called and they told me to be more patient.  well i couldn't because I'd been reading that people who had seen him after me were getting appointments .  So I called again. and they looked into it.  I got my appointments in the mail.  So, went to see the dietician and social worker and i was told by them to go ahead and call dr starr's office and tell them I "passed".  So now I'm waiting for the next step, which I believe is the general surgeon.
