1st Week

Jul 31, 2007

Today was my 1st checkup since the surgery.  I have lost 8lbs since the day of surgery.  I am happy.
I never had any trouble swallowing or problems with vomiting, after I got the anesthesia out of my system.  I was able to drink the liquids they brought into me.
When I got home, I was a little sore and had to sleep in the recliner the first night, gas pains would not let me lay down.  After that I have been good.  I have been walking in the evening.  Not too far, but getting some in every day.  I started driving on Sunday, and am now picking up my kids from summer school every day.  I go back to work in 6 days.
I get soft foods now!!!  I am glad of that.  So tired of just liquids.

July 9 Waiting

Jul 09, 2007

This is my first entry since joining OH.
So I will start a while back.
I had stopped trying to diet a long time ago, just tried to make better choices in what I ate, learned that from all my diets through the years, so for the most part, had maintained my weight for last 2 years or so.  My girlfriend had told me she really wanted to have RNY and was going to try to go through her insurance to have it done.  After jumping through lots of hoops and doing everything they asked, she was finally on her way to getting an approval for the surgery.  She had primecare insurance so it took her a while, almost a year for approval.  Even though I was happy for her and supported her all the way, I was worried that she had taken such a drastic measure to lose the weight.  Being totally honest I was scared for her.  She was to lose 10% before the surgery, but she was not able to lose any, they scheduled her surgery anyways.  Now 2 years later, she looks great and feels great!  Her high blood pressure is gone, no more aches and pains and feels good about herself.
I talked to her through out her post-op losing.  She minimal after effects, not too much vomiting and nausea, followed her protocal to the letter.  In the end of losing cycle, she has lost 140lbs.  The more I spoke with her, the more I though about having the surgery myself.  So about a year ago, I went to my Kaiser pcp and asked for a referral to find out more, he was less than thrilled.  He told me all about the negative things that would happen, not one positive note.  He did however give me the referral.  After waiting for a month, I got a postcard for the orientation class.  Within 6 weeks I was in my 6 month class, learning about nutrition, required by Kaiser, before you can go before the board for approval.
It was good to meet others like me in the class, but as far as learning more about nutrition, I think some of us could have taught the class, as we know so much about good eating from all the diets we have been on.
We were told we needed to lose 10% of our current weight from the first day of the class.  I weighed in at 283, so my goal was 28 lbs in 6 months.  We met once a week for the class and weighed in.  I have to say for the first 4 months I lost the same 5 lbs and gained the same 5 lbs over and over again.  By the last week of the class I had only lost 6 lbs.  I was determined though to lose the rest before surgery.  All my paperwork was turned in, all my labs were done and I was approved for the surgery and to see the surgeon June 5th. At my meeting with the Dr. my weight in was 269, I had lost another 8 lbs since my weight was taken.  I was thrilled.
The dr. approved my surgery, but a date was not given, cause I had not attended a mandatory support group meeting yet.  After attendance, I would get my surgery date, until then I was to go on a high protein, no starch diet.
I finally got my surgery date, July 23, 2007.  I weighed myself today, I am 259, I have lost 24 lbs!
I am taking 3 weeks leave from my job, 1 week before surgery and 2 weeks after.  I want a chance to get my house cleaned and in order before surgery and do any last minute things.
So now I am waiting............being excited and nervous and scared at the same time.
