New Here / My Story

Jun 22, 2012

Hello All!
I am new here so wanted to reach out and say hello! I have been reading the boards for awhile and gathering information. After much thought and prayer I am having the VSG surgery on 6/11/12. I have been heavy my whole life. I never really thought about surgery until I was in a car accident on September 30th 2011. That day has changed my life forever. It was a "minor" accident but I ended up with a major injury. I had shattered my hip socket. The day of the accident the hospital sent me home with pain killers and crutches and said nothing was wrong. I was not in my home town so I went home and saw a local orthopedic doctor the following week. He gave me more meds and said if I didn't feel better in a week call him and he will schedule a MRI. I called him the following week and had an MRI the next day. Before I even made it home from the hospital they called and told me to go straight to the ER. After a week in skeletal traction they finally found a trauma doctor to do my surgery. They went in and put in 10 pins and plates and tried to put me back together. I am already developing arthritis and still have a pretty bad limp from all of this. I have been in physical therapy for 6 months and am finally walking with out any assistance.

Before all this I had lost 80 lbs all on my own. I was very active and actually enjoyed exercising and participating in 5K's and doing Zumba. Now that I can not do any of those things yet I see my weight creeping back up. My orthopedic recommend me looking into having the surgery and I thought he was crazy. He says if I don't lose a lot of my weight very quickly I will need a new hip sooner rather than later. I am trying to put off a hip replacement as long as possible. I am only 34 years old and way to young to have to go thru that yet. I went home and talked to my family and decided I would at least explore the thought. I stumbled across this website and you wonderful people and again my life was changed. I have learned so much and have received so much encouragement from reading everything on here. You guys are AWESOME people!

I am super scared about my surgery on Monday. I have been trying my best to stick to the pre-op diet but have cheated a few times. I just don't know why I can't get my head back in the game like it was before the accident. I hope and pray this surgery changes my life and lets me get back to my old active self!!!

Take care all! I hope to make some life long friends here. Keep fighting the fight!
Stacy
