Test 1, 2...Test 1, 2, 3

Apr 30, 2006

DH and I scheduled a full day of testing on April 19th. We were told at our initial consult that we needed to sit in on a question and answer information seminar with our doctor, which take place on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30. We live about 50 miles for the hospital and there is bad rush hour traffic in the morning, so we decided to get a room at a hotel within walking distance of the hospital. We had our Chest X-Ray's and Abdominal Ultrasounds scheduled to begin at 7:45am. We would finish up just in time for the seminar. Two days before the 19th, the doctor's office called and said they no longer do the seminars. We decided to keep the rest of the appointments that we had scheduled. After the X-Ray's and Ultrasounds, we had a long break. We went out for breakfast, since we couldn't eat before our morning testing. We should have kept our room at the hotel to go back to. We drove around, did a little shopping and then returned to the hospital. We had our EKG's done and then had our Dietary and Psych consults. Everything went very well. Not once did anyone make me feel like they were looking at me thinking..."If you would JUST STOP EATING!!!!" They were all very comforting and encouraging. The dietician said that she wanted us to try to follow the maintenance phase of the WLS eating plan for the next month and then come back to go over more info on what to do after the surgery. I was sure glad to have DH there going through all of this with me.

Starting the Ball Rolling

Mar 30, 2006

I had my first appointment with my surgeons office on March 8th. The PA was very nice and thorough.  We filled out a huge stack of forms in the waiting room and were given prescriptions for all of the tests that we will need to comlete before we can submit to insurance.  That was it!!!  After completing the testing and 6 months of a monitored diet with our PCP, we can submit to insurance.

The testing and waiting begin. On March 16th I meet with my PCP again and explain that I need to have six months of documented weight loss attemps before we can submit to my insurance. I had started Weight Watchers, again, back in August and mentioned to my PCP that I was doing it, while I had my daughter in for her 9 month checkup, but since it was just mentioned in passing and was not written in my chart, we could not go from that date. I had to begin my countdown to my WLS from that date...MARCH 16th, 2006. So, the soonest that I can submit to insurance is September 16th, 2006. It seemed so far away. I was determined to get as much of the testing out of the way that I could and then I would just have to wait for that day to arrive.

Well, I decided to have Gastric Bypass Surgery

Feb 20, 2006

After years of being overweight and trying almost every diet out there, I finally realized it was time to consider WLS. I asked my husband what he thought about it and he said "NO WAY. Too many risks." I informed him that there were too many risks with me going on the way I was. The next day was my DD's One year check-up, so I asked my PCP about WLS and she was very supportive and gave me a referral right away. I went home and called my mother about it and was telling her how supportive my PCP was. My husband was sitting on the couch listening while I was having this discussion with my mother. When I got off the phone, I started talking to him about my appointment with the PCP that day and he said that if I was going to start looking into it, to look into it for the both of us. What a difference a day makes.

After this conversation (rather approval) I decided to get things going. I called the office of the doctor that my PCP had given me the name of and the first doctor she mentioned was booked for a couple of months, but the scheduler told me that there was another doctor that was really good and had done over 600 surgeries who had an appointment that week. I thought that was TOO soon, so I asked for an appointment the following week.
