losing after 6 months

Jul 13, 2011

SO I think it is normal for RNY patients to be concerned about slow weight loss after 6 months.  I was told at my psychologist appt before my revision to really try to lose as much as possible during the first 6 months.  So when I got to my 6 months I worried I hadn't lost enough, I wasn't going to lose all my weight.  Not true.  I am still losing.  I did plateau for awhile but am back losing.

WHat do I recommend??  Look at your diet, are you eating enough calories, are you getting enough protien???  I logged my food at dailyplate.com.  I try to get 60-80 grams/protien.  I eat 4 small meals/day.

update iron infusions at 8 month follow up

Jul 13, 2011

So when looking back at my pre op lab work for my lap band to RNY revision my iron was low then.  I wish that I had known at pre op because I would have started taking iron then.

I did have to have iron infusions because my iron would not go above 8.  So I drove to Hickory for 6 weeks of iron infusions.  So glad I did them.  I felt so much better after the treatments.  Now my iron is 119.  We will monitor at my 1 year appt when I have all my labs done but right now just taking the iron in my multi

NOTE: Make sure you get lab work done and follow up as needed with the surgeon

Revision update

Feb 06, 2011

I am 98% happy with the revision from lap band to RNY.  The only problem I seem to be having is constipation.  And it is affecting my pouch and making it Oscar the Grouch.  Now I have to remember that I have IBS before and evidently still do.  My surgeons office had told me to do senokot or peri colace well it caused my stomach to be on fire and it caused my pouch to hurt.  Now that I have stopped that and am following my gastro doctors orders the pouch has not been angry.

I am lucky that my gastro dr and my WLS surgeon are in the same building and they have worked close with me.   Sometimes the gastro dr helps me more than surgeon because my poor surgeon does not know what to do with me!!

I have lost 40 pounds since surgery on 10/8 and I am very happy with that.  I have lost very slow.  Not sure what that is about.  I I started out 218 at pre op and now weigh 177.

Thanksgiving

Nov 26, 2010

Well, It has been 7 weeks since surgery.  I am very happy with the weight loss. I was 212 at home the day of surgery.  This morning I weighed 190.  Was able to eat a small plate at Thanksgiving lunch.  Everything is good.

I think I am not getting enough protien.  Need to work on that.  Also need to work on getting enough water in.  HAve been tired. Need to get my iron checked.  Going next week.  They want me to get my ferretin checked.  Somehow Dr. did not order this test.  oh Well.

I wish I had had the RNY surgery  in the first place. Still afraid of weight regain.  I know this is the most important time make the right food choices and start good behaviors.

This evening having a hard time with grazing.  Not really wanting something sweet.  Just want to eat.  This I have to still work on.

10/8 lap band to bypass

Oct 16, 2010

Had to be in Hickory at 8:30 and surgery is at 10:30am.  When we got there at 8:30 put me in a room.  Nurse came back in 30 minutes later and said surgeon was already here and was ready to do surgery. They hooked me up, did lab work and off I went.  Because the revision takes longer I knew I would be in surgery for several hours.  I woke up and was in the recovery room. Wide awake.  THere was a older woman beside me holloring Help me, help me.  I told the nurses if they would find me some duct tape I would tape her mouth.  Needless to say they moved me to regular room in a few minutes.  Had the nurse call my dad so he could come up and see me.

I was sore on the right side where doctor removed my port and removed the band.  Did't really feel any different with the stomach.  Ice chips on Friday.  Saturday I had a upper GI and they checked for leaks.  No leaks.  Gave me clear liquids for a while.  Lunch I had full liquids.  No problems with drinking.

When dr came and see me he said that the band was in proper position, did not find anything strange going on.
HE was able to remove the band and do the bypass.

I am so glad the surgery went smooth.   I did not know until I woke up whether I had the bypass.  That was the scary part.  I was so afraid that I would not have my band and not have the bypass either.

update

Sep 05, 2010

Seen Dr Cox on August 16th. I am having pain around the band that they totally do not understand. Also having  spasms.  I have not lost any weight since November. Heart burn and acid reflux like you would not believe. Finally told him that I wanted to have revision.  He tried to give me every opportunity to keep the band. I am so over the band.  I know the band works for some people. I just have to admit that I am a Lap band failure and move on to make the bypass a success.

Call from Insurance person at Hickory surgical.  She has approval from Blue Cross Blue shields and is ready to schedule everything. WOW. I am so ready but that was fast.  My new surgery date is October 8th.  I will have the band taken out and bypass done.  Waiting on her to call me back with pre op information

June update

Jun 08, 2009

I weighed 238.2. Lost 34 pounds total since official weigh in on 1/14. Dr. was very pleased. Me not so much. I have had a hard time this time. I have done all protien for 2 or 3 days. Got bright idea to do all shakes. That did not work because the shakes just go thru the band. If you are a lap band patient I do not recommend doing all protien shakes. I was starving. I am starving  between breakfast and lunch. Told Dr. Cox this. Am not able to eat 3 meals/day and no snacks yet.

Well I got a fill. Not sure how much he did. This will be my 4th fill. Did tell him I did not think I needed a full 1 cc but did need a fill.

I am very tight. Worried that I have too much now. Have not been able to tolerate some solid foods. Example sausage is my enemy. Beef stew is my enemy.

Chicken is still my friend most of the time.

May update

Jun 08, 2009

May 5th 3rd fill  1cc (Weighed 245.7) Fluctuating as normal with weight. Up 1.7. What the heck. I don't know about this darn band.   Had good appointment. Easy to find port and he did not have to do alot to find center of port. Very quiet at appointment. Don't think Dr. Cox knew what to think of that. I am normally such a talker. Just wanted to be quiet. I know me??

Well band restriction has varied this month a lot. After this fill swollen-had a hard time with food on day 3 after fill.  Yuck.

Had a 2 episodes of pb or something. I got stuck with turkey tenderloin. Now it was too dry. Everyone at work thought I was going to pass out. Face turned purple, looked like I was going to pass out.

2nd time. My own dang fault. Got stuck from eggplant parmesean. What the heck. Okay being honest with myself. Got VERY STRESSED and ate too fast. Ran to bathroom. By the time I got there it had went down esophagus.

Lesson. Learn to eat slow and small bites

April update

Jun 08, 2009

4/1 Back to surgeon for 8 week check up and fill (Weighed 247) 1 cc fill.  Dr says he will do gallbladder surgery-not very happy about it but I have pushed the subject he will do rather than argue with me. Hee hee. Did I say I was stubborn

Lets just say April has been my month for family drama. I wanted a friend to take me to have gallbladder surgery but my family wants my sister n law to take. Need someone that is quiet and will let me do things my way. Dad has gotten off and will be taking me to have surgery.

Not losing this month after fill like I normally do. Scared I will stop losing.

Gallbladder surgery was 4/20. Surgery was at 11:30. Woke up really quick this time. I was awake and talking by 12:15. I do not react to anesthesia very well so this was a shock. This is the reason I wanted to go back to Frye because they knew me from other surgery.  Finally got to go home about 4:30 or 5 after pitching a fit. My vital signs kept dropping. Mostly because when I go to sleep I have sleep apnea. Kept making the machines alarm. Got up walked around and everything. As soon as I would lay back down alarm again. Finally let me go home. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!

4/29. Check up for gallbladder removal (Weighed 244) Feel so much better. I was in pain with the gallbladder every day to some degree. Now no pain. Dr. Cox keeps asking if I feel better. Think he is skeptical that this was going to help.
