Amazing, but our lives can be so fragile.

Apr 02, 2008

Last Thursday (March 27th) I had a heart attack. As a matter of fact as I was writing the latest blog (before this one) I was having that attack. I thought, as many of us do, that I was dumping. I came home from work at 10:30 that morning and laid down, wrote the little blog that I refered to, and rested. My chest was hurting, my sternum was burning. I went from sweaty to chilling and that just kept repeating. I would sit by a portable tower heater we have and shiver and then all of a sudden just catch fire and sweat. Kim came home for her lunch hour at 11:30 and noticed right away that I wasn't doing well. I decided to call Dr. Warnock's office. I spoke to his nurse and thank God for her expert guidance. She said that it could be dumping, but since I have had a history of heart problems, I should go to the ER and at least let them check me out. (I did have a stint put in 2 years ago. I was checked out by the same cardiologist for clearance for my RNY back in November. There were extra test's ordered because of some abnormal readings on the stress test, but finally Dr. Huq cleared me for surgery.  Dr. Huq is a big time advocate of weight loss surgery and it was him three years ago that started me thinking about it.) When I walked into the ER here in Friona and told them what I was feeling they immediately started checking me out. I won't go into every detail since I don't like typing all that well, but I can tell you that the EKG indicated a heart attack and the enzyme levels were indicating the same and before I knew it, I heard the helecoptor land and in another instance I was lifting off and heading to Amarillo's Baptist St. Anthony's hospital. The personell at Friona's little country hospital did and absolute marvelous job of saving my life, in fact I went down there this morning and thanked them and hugged them for what they had done for me. It was weird walking past that heli-pad though?? I was given the proper amounts of morphine and blood thinner and by the time we lifted off, I was pain free! The staff at BSA's CCU unit just took over and comforted me, stabilized me and basically just spoiled me. I was stable enough by Monday to undergo an angiogram and we found that the culprit was more blockage.....95% blockage right next to the old stint. Dr. Huq performed the angioplast and then inserted another stint a short distance from the old one.  I asked him before I was dismissed yesterday what caused this. I continued...could it have been a blood clot from the RNY or just more plaque or what?? He said that we would never know, but he figured that it could have been a clot that started the process and plaque finished it off. He said that my cholestoral levels are already better than they were last November when he was clearing me for surgery, but that we still had a ways to go.

I have tried so hard the last couple of years to rectify some of the neglect that I once had for my body. For too many years I thought I was Superman, only find out that wasn't even close. But now I can proudly say that I have stopped a 31 year nicotine habit, and that I did endour an unbelievable process of clearance to recieve my Gastric Bypass surgery, and that I have lost an amazing amount of weight in a very short period of time. Even in light of what has recently happed, I still believe that if I will continue towards that goal weight and maintain that weight, within a 10 lb. variance and do what I'm told to do,  I can still live to be a very old man!  I'm so blessed to feel so good today. I just wanted my buddies here at the OH forum to know that I was thinking about you and I'm sorry I couldn't report in any faster. I'll stay in touch better now that I'm home.

God bless,

Three weeks out!

Mar 27, 2008

It sure has gone by fast, but three weeks ago this morning I was lying under the bright lights getting re-born!!!! I must say that what little pain and discomfort there has been, it has been SOOOOO worth it. My life has changed drastically in the last couple of months and especially in the last 21 days! I've currently lost 63 pounds from my highest point but more important loses are: no Metformin (blood sugar meds)...no Altace (blood pressure meds)...and no CPAP MACHINE (sleep apnea). I'm still pinching myself because this is almost too good to be true. I'll post again in a month or so.

Home at last!

Mar 11, 2008

Last night I returned home after be gone for six days! My doctor is 300 miles away so all of his out of town patients must stay close for three extra days post op! It's been a great ride though, one that I would do again in a heartbeat if required! I'm already down 40 lbs from my highest point late last year, and 22 of those pounds in the last 15 days! Thank God I'm home and thank Him again that I'm safe and on this ride! Thanks to Dr. Warnock and his incredible staff as well. He is a star!
