Sugery....blow by blow....YIKES!

Apr 16, 2008

Monday: 415am; Woke up to find I had lost 6 pounds on the bowel prep!  WOOHOO!  1.5 lbs away from Onederland!  I knew it wouldn't last, but it was nice to be so close!  Gave all the kids their goodbye hugs, kisses and love you's..that was tough! Showered and got to the hospital at 535, or so. DH stayed with me for a while (he doesn't do hospitals too well), so I told him to leave at about 615 or so...he needed to get the kids off to school anyways..and that was more important to me than having company!

They started my IV and asked lots of questions up on the short-stay surgery ward. No biggie. Got wheeled down to PACU at about 645 to meet with the anesthesiologist, more questions.  They started some drug to "calm me". HAHA..like I needed to be calmed?!?!  I remember sitting around on the stretcher alot and I think they took me to the OR around 720 or 725. I remember it getting colder and colder as we got closer to the OR. I remember going into the OR, John was there (is that his name? I think it is, the surgery assistant?)  I got over onto the operating table and don't remember a thing from that point on!

So  4pm:  I finally wake up!  I'm in the post-anethesia care unit.  The first thing I remember is the nurse saying to me: "wow, it's about time you wake up.  You were under anesthetic for 6 hours!"  I was still very groggy, but thought this lady musta been nuts, cuz surgery was only supposed to last like 3 hours or so!  I just kept my nutty comment to myself and they wheeled me up to my room on T-1.  It was ok, corner room with a window view of Rite-Aid and Main St, Lewiston.  Nice to hear sirens all evening too..haha!

Evening:  The nurses were great, very attentive. Asked if I remembered Dr L seeing me in the PACU, duh..NOT!  DH called at some point and asked the nurse if I was ready for the kids to come see me.  Of course, I wanted to see them!  I was up, out of bed at around 6, I think.  The CNA helped me walk the first time, with all the cords (IV pump, PCA pump, foley catheter) it was quite a fun trip!  Dr L came up to see me 3 times that evening.  During one of those trips, he explained to me, again, what had happened during surgery (more details to follow).  The kids came up with DH with flowers (pink carnations), Zach's class at school had made a big get well card for me.  It was all really cool.  I was VERY drowsy and the kids were kinda laughing at me cuz I kept falling asleep in the chair!  I got plenty of gentle hugs and kisses though, which made me feel so much better!  The kids and DH only stayed about an hour and I was totally tired!  I did get up and walk some more, by myself. I think I went to bed around 8, but I can't be sure.

The first night:  YIKES!  Talk about some poking and prodding!  Vital signs every hour for a while, then every two hours through the night. I think I had blood drawn at least twice during the first night! I had a pulse oximeter on my left finger and a blood pressure cuff on my right arm..anything to keep you awake.  I also realized at some point that I had a second IV in my left hand!  Not sure why that was put in, but I'm sure it was during surgery, cause I sure didn't have it before surgery!   My room mate got up in the middle of the night, which woke me and kept me up for a while. ( I felt really bad for her!  She was supposed to have surgery at 1130, I think, but she never got to go in until like 230, because I took so long!  She got up to the room at about 6 or 7, I think.)
So, the first night was awful!  I didn't sleep well (cpap and all!) and I kept having such wicked gas pain. It was in my chest, just at my breastbone and shot through me like a spear right into my left shoulder blade.  I kept complaining about it so much, that I had to have another EKG done Tuesday morning just to make sure it wasn't my heart.  The pain from the surgery itself wasn't really that bad..it was mostly the gas!  Even Dr L agreed with me that the meds wouldn't do much for that pain and that moving was the best thing I could do!  So, up and at em!  I think I started walking at about 4am Tuesday morning.  Dr L came in at around 8, I think and said the EKG was fine..walk, walk, walk!!  I was also very nauseous through most of the night. They kept giving me Pepcid and some other med that I can't remember now. But, they ended up changing my pain med from Morphine to Dilaudid.  (I think I might have used the Morpine 4 times..maybe.  I used the Dilaudid 2, or maybe 3 times)  I was so nervous about being nauseous and the pain really wasn't that bad anyways.

So, most of Tuesday, I walked, slept a little when I could, walked some more! Sat up in the chair! Got a ton of cards!  That was fun!  Dr Loggins came in 4 times on Tuesday. He was really awesome, just trying to make me more comfortable with the pain in my chest/gas pain.  The foley came out just about 12 noon on Tuesday, so that made walking easier and mandatory at that point!  haha.  BTW..there is a really nice Solarium up there on the first floor..it has rocking chairs, fish tank, electronic piano, lots of windows overlooking the ER parking lot!  It is nice and peaceful down there and it's a nice long walk too!

Mom and dad came to visit me Tues afternoon for a while (oh yeah, Cheryl came up to see me too, but she DIDN'T wake me UP!   I wish she had!!!)  I was still tired from not sleeping much Monday night and the gas pain and nausea were not fun!  They didn't stay for long but brought me some beautiful flowers, a card, and some soduko books and little game.  They went shopping while I rested and came back with the DH and kids at about supper time.  (Glad I didn't get in trouble for that...6 visitors in the room but you're only allowed to have 2!  Glad my room mate wasn't in the room much!)  I did some walking with mom and dad and with the kids. They were surprised when I walked them down to the elevator and then to the solarium.

They changed my pain med sometime during the day on Tuesday, so my nausea finally started to resolve. Tuesday night was a much better night. I think I actually slept for 2-3 hours straight without getting woken up!  They did come in and take vital signs often (maybe every 3-4 hours or so) and then more blood work at about 4am!  Dr L hadn't started the lovenox with me yet as my blood counts were still too low and he didn't want to make them drop any lower by starting the blood thinner.  The nausea was finally getting better and the pain in my chest was better at times too, so I was starting to feel better!

5am Weds morning:  UP and at em!  I couldn't sleep anyways!  Started walking the halls early. Got cleaned up as best I could. Started my period! YIPPEE!  Luckily I had come prepared, but the nurse offered me whatever I needed to help me out!  John came in at about 7 or 730 and filled me in on the "leak test".  I was scheduled for 830.  Got a ride to the xray dept at 815, leak test...YUCK!  That barium stuff is horrible!  The first thing you can drink and it has to taste so horrible!  EEWWW!  Luckily, I was able to drink enough of it that Dr L got to see what he needed to on the test.  Dr L, John, Crystal, and Corrine were all there for the leak test.  Dr L said everything looked good!  I decided, since I was feeling so chipper....haha, I walked back to my room pushing the IV pole. The Xray tech just followed with the wheelchair and my chart.  Back in my room, the RN layed out 16 little med cups and filled a few of them with water...start drinking!  1oz over 15 minutes may seem kinda crazy, but, when you don't know what to expect from your stomach...it's all good! Things went down really well.  I was given some milk of mag (liquid..eeww..almost as bad as the barium stuff!!) and then one of the Prevacid solutabs (those aren't my favs either!)  Since everything was doing ok, I was disconnected from the IV!  WOOHOO!! Freedom!!  It was much easier to be up and walking, even though I still had to be sipping!  The nurse came in at about 11 and said that my blood count was better and Dr L wanted me to start the Lovenox. The RN was great and helped me give myself the first injection, just to make sure I did it right. It was more scary than it was  painful!

1pm: The whole team came to meet with my roommate and myself. Since we had both had RNY, they kinda just reviewed all the discharge info with both of us at the same time!  Dr Loggins went first: ok to shower tomorrow, drain will come out before you go home, keep fluids up, etc, etc.  We know all the info, but good to hear it again!  Crystal gave us our lab slips for next week as well as appointment cards for our staple removal/2 week follow up.  Corrinne went over the next phase of our diet, just to be sure we HAD it!  John, then pulled the drain out! (it wasn't that bad. The part that pinched a bit was when he had to cut the suture holding the tube in. Once that was gone, the drain was a breeze!)
The RN came back in, took out the IV (she had just capped them off earlier) and then went over all the discharge instructions again!  DH picked me up at about 2pm!  Weirdest part of all is that you don't HAVE to leave the hospital in a wheelchair anymore.  So DH grabbed all my bags, I grabbed the flowers and we walked down to the car which was in the parking garage over by 10 High St.  It was such a beautiful day! WOW!

So, now I'm home and sippin away!  Happy to be on the loser's bench!

1 day left!

Apr 13, 2008

WOW!      I can't believe it's almost here!  Surgery is tomorrow!      I am nervous      still and probably won't sleep much tonight but that's ok.        I am at peace too.  I went to church this morning, took a walk, and now have started all the prep for tomorrow.  EWWW!!       (At least I am doing it during the day, which is easier than when I had to do it at 2am for the colonoscopy!!!)  Things are quiet today. Played a game of Monopoly with the boys!  (Of course, I won! haha)  Will play something else with them shortly then make sure all the homework is done.  Have most of my stuff packed except for last minute stuff like my cpap and hairbrush.  I think I'm ready.  Will call mom, dad, Nik and Marc later to say hi.       It will be a good day!   To all my friends on OH!      Thanks you for your support, wishes, and honks!  I can't do this without you!  THANK YOU!   Talk to you all in a few days!  Make room on that loser's bench for me!  (Jackie and Peggy!  My surgivesary sisters!  Good luck!  Speedy healing to you!  Talk to you soon!)

Saturday before surgery

Apr 12, 2008

WOW!       Less than 48 hours to go!       I am.....excited.   ....nervous  .....hungry.... so many emotions!  Started the clear liquids today.  For some reason, I'm hungry!  Go figure!?!?      Just one more day of liquids, then I won't be hungry anymore!  Took my pre-surg measurements tonight (down 15.5 inches since I measured in Feb)  So..that's cool!       I should have been smart     and took them when I first saw Dr L, but hindsight is 20-20, right?  I sent emails to the kids teachers to let them know Dan would be handling things at home for a few days and to warn them in case the boys are "distracted" at all in school.  They have a good bunch of teachers, so they'll be fine!  Tomorrow, I start the bowel prep!        EEWWW!  I still need to pack my bag too.  I have to remember to pack my cpap Monday morning!       I guess they won't do the surgery if I don't have it with me!  We cleaned the house today and there's plenty of food in the fridge and freezer for the DH and kids.  Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything!        Will call and talk      to my bro, sis, mom and dad tomorrow too and just spend some time with the kids.       Should be a quiet day!

OMG! I feel like a drug store!

Apr 09, 2008

I had dropped off all my prescriptions at Hannaford yesterday on my way home from all the appointments, so I went to pick them up today.  WOW!  Two bottles of Fleet phospho-soda, Lovenox injections, Prevacid, and Neomycin. I also have my Centrum chewies, iron, and Vit D sitting up here on the countertop by the computer!  It really looks like a drug store here!  Oh well, hopefully I'll have everything I need once I get home on Weds!  I have a closet full of different types of protein: powder, liquid, etc.  I also have plenty of sugar free jello, Crystal light mixes in various flavors, and protein gelatin mixes.  I bought a Magic Bullet today too.  I think the DH will not like that too much, but I wanna make mixing these things easier so they are easier to get down!  I also bought my baby wipes and a different flavor chap stick for the hospital, just in case I don't like the flavor I already bought. (I'm being kinda weird!  haha)  I also put away most of the veggies (frozen) that I had bought away so they aren't taking up space in the kitchen freezer (we also have a freezer in the garage, so all my stuff is in there now.) I have most of my stuff picked out for the hospital, I'll just have to pack it up this weekend.  Since I'll be doing liquids and the bowel prep, I don't think I'll have too much of anything else to do, except clean the house (YUCK!!!)  So, off I go to cook supper for the fam and then do my paperwork from work, then a walk....hope I don't run out of time!

Pre-op appts

Apr 08, 2008

8am: met with Corrinne, our NUT!     She reviewed info for post-op, reviewed my food long, answered questions, no biggie.  She thinks I'm ready.
1pm: met with Dr Loggins.  He's a nice guy.      He answered all my questions, explained everything about what to expect, possible complications, etc, etc. He was proud of my weight loss as this will make the surgery easier.  Hopefully I don't have too much scar tissue from previous surgeries (3 c-secions with midline incision and gallbladder surger).  I'd hate to go through all this to find out that he can't do the surgery!       I'm leaving it in his hands and My Father in Heaven's Hands.      They both have very skilled hands and know what is best for me!
After I met with Dr Loggins, Crystal came in a reviewed the pre-op diet, bowel prep, use of Lovenox, incentive spirometer, gave me scripts for Prevacid, antibiotics, Lovenox, and the bowel prep stuff.      I'm SOOOO looking forward to the bowel prep!       NOT!  She was great!  Lots of information to absorb!  Good thing it's all written down!
230p:  Over to CMMC for the pre-op testing.     Mostly was an interview of past medical history, another EKG, and lab work.  I didn't have to have another chest x-ray as I had one in January with all the workup for surgery.  Now I get to wear this lovely pink bracelet until surgery that has my name and info on it for the blood bank, in case I need a transfusion. I guess it will help if I forget my name too!       It's very pretty!  haha
330p: dropped all 4 prescriptions off at Hannaford. I'll pick them up tomorrow.
7pm: Pre-op support group!  Got to meet Tanya's mom and Tarka.      Both seem very nice.  Tarka's presentation was awesome and really struck alot of people, I think. She looks amazing and seems to be an amazing person.  There were quite a few people there.  A few familiar faces, but lots of new ones too.  I think that's what makes it hard for people to open up.  Maybe the post-op group will be easier since people are getting to know one another more.  Everyone that goes throught this and looks good and feels good is just such an inspiration.  Hope I can be the same for someone, someday!     Just a few more days!  I can't wait to start my new life on the loser's bench!         Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!

Pre-op pix

Apr 06, 2008

YIKES!  I took my pre-op pix tonight!  NOT GOOD!  And no, I'm not going to post any on here yet!      Maybe after surgery, once I've lost a bunch, I might be willing!  MAYBE!   8 days left until surgery!      Time is flying by!        I've been being "BAD"!          Ate out at 99 rest on Friday night then ate at a Chinese buffet last night!  That's it for "last suppers" so to speak!        I've been slacking on the exercise the past week too. I am getting back into the routine starting today though.         I just walked 3 miles today and it felt pretty good.  Wish the knee would quit bugging me though.  Hopefully it will feel better with less weight/strain on it.  Who knows?!?!        Back to work tomorrow!      1 week left!!!!!!!  I can do it!!!!!!!!

Appointments

Apr 04, 2008

Kim from Dr L's office called today!  I was so scared when I heard the begining of the message!  I thought they were calling to reschedule everything!  YIKES!!        Luckily, it was just to confirm all my appointments for Tuesday!       So, I meet with Corrinne at 8am, Dr L at 1pm, and pre-op testing at CMMC at 230pm.  It will be a very busy day!  Trying to keep my day at work pretty light!  I can't wait to get this done!!       10 days and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!                              I'm in Mass. right now with my daughter's high school softball team!  She was invited to play down here and she's only a Freshman!!  It's wicked cool!       Can't wait to watch them play tomorrow!   Then, off to mom and dad's house for another "Last Supper"!! haha!!  (We went to 99 tonight for supper with all the girls.  I had chicken fajiitas....not good, but at least I got my veggies in!!)       I'm thinking a nice plate of fried seafood as my last big meal before surgery!   I'm gonna gain back all the weight I've lost!!   I'll need to do some heavy duty exercise this week to work it all off!!       I'm not gonna feel guilty about it though cuz I've been really good about counting everything and exercising.  I'm going to enjoy this meal knowing that I deserve it!     I still can't wait to have surgery!  OMG!!!  I'm nervous but can't wait to be able to fit into sizes that I haven't worn since 4th or 5th grade!  It will be amazing!!!        Ok, so this has been to scattered and random...but that's just me tonight!    Enjoy!!!!          Hugs to everyone!!!!!!!!

Registration

Mar 31, 2008

I got a call from CMMC today to pre-register me for the pre-op testing next week!  YIKES!      This is really going to happen!!!!         I can't wait!!!!!!

Softball season

Mar 23, 2008

High school softball starts tomorrow!  WOOHOO!  My daughter is a freshman this year and we are really exicted to see how she does!  She's a pitcher and, well, I think she's pretty good.  The bummer is that her first scrimmage is the day that I will be getting out of the hospital after my RNY!  Gotta keep hoping I feel well enough to be there and that I can get a ride from someone!  Gotta go support the GIRL~!!!!  I can't wait for spring and summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kinda flipped me out!!!

Mar 19, 2008

I got the "official" letter of approval from my insurance company today!       Yeah!!  It's really gonna happen!     Only thing is...the letter says I am approved for the surgery and a 1 night stay in the hospital!  YIKES!!     We were told that Dr Loggins likes to keep you in there for 2 nights!  So, needless to say, I was on the phone with Crystal in a flash!  Not to worry!  She says that the insurance company always just approves 1 night and then the case manager from the hospital gets the rest of the time approved once you are admitted.  Crystal reassured me that this is standard procedure!   PHEW!!     Glad she knows what's going on!!   The other thing that was weird is that the date for the surgery was listed as May 15th!!  WOW!  My surgery date is April 14th!!   Again, Crystal said they just pick a date...any date, and they don't really care when it happens as long as it happens in the requested time frame!  Like I said, good thing Crystal knows all this stuff!  I was kinda scared for a minute!   Guess I'm still good to go!  I still can't wait!!!!!!!!!
