Protein Shakes?

OK so I see that everyone is drinking protein shakes, so I went and bought some protein powder before surgery and I drink it every now and then, but my doctor has yet to tell me that I should or that I even need protein shakes. My question is should I drink them and what is the benefit of these shakes?  I know it may sound crazy but I'm doing it because everyone else is lol, but I'm sure that it's important because everyone is talking about them.  My friend can'twaituntil has suggested one to me that I am planning to buy, but I just wanted some feed back from my OH family.
