Well...my story sounds very similar to all of yours. I have battled with weight since Jr. High. I remember being around 180lbs back then. I can recall in 6th grade on the school bus boy whom everyone had a crush on telling me I had "thunder thighs". By high school my weight tapered off, but still rose. I was involved in volleyball and basketball my freshman year in highschool, but due to lack of family support I did not further seek to be involved in any sport thereafter. College and many disastrous relationships later, I peaked at around 275lbs. able to lose 25-30 lbs at most on any of my yo-yo diets was all I have been able to do. I was at my all time lowest weight this summer, around 242lbs, but just couldn't hake any more weigh off. I've done it all! Weight watchers, Optifast, Atkins, Low carb, Lean for Life, diet pills, etc. Then finally after wanting surgery for about three years, I decided to take control of my life. When I changed employers in July I decided to choose the best possible insurance I could, with the hopes that I’d find a doctor who was willing to refer me for surgery. Many doctors in the past had explained my BMI wasn't high enough. So I decided since I knew my BMI wasn't high enough I would let all the exercise and attempts to lose weight go! I did, but it felt bad and good all at the same time...I was tired and didn't feel well, but I was eating what I had wanted. So I gained almost 20lbs between August and now, my BMI reached 40 and there's no reason why any one can tell me I can't get the surgery. Sad thing, but I felt that I had to do it (I have no health risks or illnesses, so after much research I knew a BMI of 36 wasn't going to get me approved). So here's how everything went:
8/1/07 - enrolled in Blue Shield of CA HMO/POS
9/5/07 - first visit and consult w/my PCP to get referral for bariatric surgery
10/11/07 - Initial surgical consult w/Bariatric surgeon (Dr. Cuneen)
10/30/07 - Consult w/Dietician & Nutritionist
Sometime in between here, my insurance (Blue shield of CA-POS/HMO approved me for the surgery)
11/26/07 - Upper GI/Abd UTZ
11/29/07 - Pre-op educational class
12/6/07 - Chart cleared
12/31/07 - had surgery
5/23/09 - got married
8/?/09 - we're expecting
4/11/10 - had a bouncing baby boy
today - beginng my weight loss journey again...
