15 days to Surgery

Feb 20, 2010

i'm going to start this 15 day countdown with a list of foods which I enjoy during each phase of the surgery.  I'll update it regularly and then maybe convert this into a post later to help people when they are grocery shopping.

I guess this might be a bit more challenging for me than it is for those of you in the States as the choice of low fat/no fat foods seems to be less than I was used to in the UK - or the cost for some of these things is crazy.  On the plus side we do have a few shops which tend to stock more amercan brands so I will go and have a look at these today to see what they have on offer.

Have ordered a small bullet type blender which I hope will be useful too.

16 days to Surgery

Feb 20, 2010

Well now I know why I fell asleep yesterday - throat is sore and I have a temperature and a thumping headache - took to my bed this afternoon for a nap and have just had a lovely dinner cooked for me by my hubbie.  It's a belated Valentine meal where each year he cooks - and also an advance Wedding Anniversary - as it will be 1 year tomorrow since we got married - wow has the year gone fast.

Just had a lovely email from my mum - she wants to come out and stay with us for a week after my surgery - it will be lovely to see her - and as she had surgery this time last year I will be able to pick her brains and ask her lots about recovery tips etc.  Slightly worried she won't be able to get into the bath here though for a shower so may have to take her down to the changing room of the gym in my appt - but sure we will manage !

Have ordered a few books from Amazon.com so am waiting for them to arrive via Shop&Ship - guess they will be with me in about a week or so's time.

Meeting up with a fellow weight loss contact for coffee tomorrow which will be great - only a few days until Andy's parents arrive so plenty to do before they arrive - am looking forward to seeing them - not seen them in about 9 months or so.

Bought some protein shake mixes - Myoplex Lite - which look ok plus some chewable calcium tablets today in preparation, also have my mums notes to read regarding what to eat etc so I can plan some grocery shopping

Bye for now

Surgery in 17 days time...

Feb 19, 2010

Well today is the weekend here in Dubai and I must admit to having a very lazy day.  Didn't wake up til 8 am and for the first time in a long time it was after my husband !

Had a lovely weekend breakfast - bacon, grilled tomatoes and eggs and then managed to fall asleep on the sofa for 2 hours - really lovely deep sleep.

Just been out for dinner at Soy - have lovely noodles, hammour fish and duck shared with hubbie - was trying to figure out what I will be able to eat on the menu after surgery in terms of portion size.  My worry is that hubbie will feel the urge to finish up anything that I don't eat and so he will gain weight too - I will need to make sure that I always order appetisers or half portions or take some home etc.

Been looking for a book on nutrition after surgery, nothing to be found in the bookshop at Ibn Battuta so might try the Dubai Mall or alternatively Amazon and get it shipped out.  It's so expensive buying books here - I guess we pay extra for shipping and also the price remains fixed in Dirhams even though the currency exchange doesn't and I am still paid in the UK so am constantly converting prices in my head - not sure that you ever stop doing that.  My SIL has been out there 7 years and she still converts back into Sterling.

Nothing major to report on the surgery front - apart from the fact that each day it gets closer is great - I am looking forward to starting my journey to the new me.

Just off to get a glass of wine - am drinking the last of my wine box before I get the surgery and become less able to enjoy a large glass without getting too drunk ! Cheers !

Surgery in 18 days time ....

Feb 18, 2010

So, it was my last day at work today - went in to say goodbye to the team which was quite sad - I will miss them greatly but need to focus on me for a while and to let them move on too.

I was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers and a card plus the most huge selection of chocolates all wrapped up in a beautiful arabic display - I'm not sure what this is called - but it's beautiful and too nice to open (plus no doubt I will want to eat them all - so will wait until my guests arrive next week and they can tuck in !).  There was also a fabulous cake from the French Bakery which was yummy.

I've started to make some friends on this site and also managed to find someone locally in Dubai who is contemplating the same surgery as me too in Dubai so we are planning to meet on Sunday for a coffee - it would be good to get together and discuss this - I've not told anyone at work and don't intend to so it will be good to find a fellow WLS pal who is local to me too.

Not managed to track down any protein powder yet - will go on a mission and do this on Sunday or Monday.  Dubai is a funny place for shopping for food - there is certainly plenty of everything and all sorts of cuisines etc - but sometimes you struggle to get a regular supply of something so if you see if you tend to buy in multiples and build up a stockpile because you don't know when you will see it again - which sounds a bit sad but that's how it is.  I'm also always asking guests to bring out silly little things from the Uk either because you can't buy it here - or it costs a fortune because of the shipping and customs duty etc.

Found a beautiful Betty Boo avatar to add to my profile - this is the body that I know I have under this excess baggage that I've been carrying around with me !

Set up some goals on the site too so have some targets to work towards which is great.

It's the weekend tomorrow and Saturday so am looking forward to a few days off with my hubbie - and then it's our 1st Wedding Anniversary on Sunday (though we have been together for almost 15 years now).

First Blog - Surgery in 19 days time

Feb 17, 2010

Well - this is my first blog on this site - although I have set up my own blog site too - but not yet brave enough to publish it !

So - just under 3 weeks to my surgery for VSG and Gall Bladder removal.  I have been told that I don't need to do a pre-surgery diet so that's good - albeit I have guests coming for 2 weeks so am likely to put on a few pounds whilst they are here rather than lose.  It's a good temperature here in Dubai at the moment so must of us have guests coming usually for 2 weeks at a time between mid Oct to the end March - then it starts getting hotter and they stay at home whilst we swelter in 50+ degrees !

Am really looking forward to my surgery, I paid for my mum to have it this time last year and I have to say it's been life changing for her - she has lost about 7 stone so far and it's made a big difference to her as she has bad arthritis in her knees.  So I am lucky as I know what to expect from speaking to her.

My pre-op is less than 2 weeks away and I am keen to get this out of the way and to start my journey to a new me !  Plenty of things scheduled in the next few weeks to keep me busy before the surgery - including the challenge of trying to find suitable drinks/protein drinks etc in Dubai.

Will blog more as my surgery gets closer.
