Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had tried every diet under the sun all throughout my life. When I was younger I would lose weight only to gain it back plus more. As I aged I found myself unable to lose even when working with a dietitian and exercising nearly daily. I was worn out and in pain every day. My knees and back were in constant torment. I was ashamed of how I looked and finally isolated myself in my home. When I went out to the grocery store I felt like people stared in my cart and judged me.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Going on family outings and sitting on a bench while others walked the flea market or zoo. I told my husband I liked to watch people but in reality I knew I couldn't keep up and didn't want to limit their fun. Another terrible thing was all the medicine I had to take for high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes and high blood pressure. I felt like an 80 year old instead of a 50 year old.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Getting rid of the meds for diabetes, cholesterol, and triglycerides. The blood pressure meds are down for three pills to one low dose tablet so that's great too! Now I have the energy to walk for 3 miles or more per day and actually enjoy it! Now when we visit flea markets, hubby tells me to slow down. Now I am living life, camping, hiking and doing anything I set my mind to do. I can buy attractive clothes that look good in any store and go into a restaurant without even a thought about whether I can fit in a booth. And best of all I don't fear stepping on the scale at the doctors office anymore. My RNY has truly given me my life back. In fact it's a better life than ever before! Wish I had taken that first step so much sooner!
