My experience with Dr. Mitchell could not have been better. I loved how he and his team prepared me for the surgery and what to expect afterwards. The team at the hospital took great care of me and were very informative. I left the hospital feeling prepared for the week to come.

I researched having Gastric Bypass surgery for the past 5 years. I met with several surgeons and was introduced to their programs throughout SC including MUSC. I chose Dr. Mitchell hands down and I am so glad that I did. My experience with Dr. Mitchell and Roper St. Francis has been Outstanding! My care from the very beginning has been exceptional. I started out by going to the information seminar where I met Dr. Mitchell and his staff they were very personal and friendly. I am a self-pay patient and I decided to go the next step and have my visit with Dr Mitchell in his office, get more detail about his program and get a better feel of the care that I would be receiving if I chose his program. I was very pleased with my visit and after considering my options I chose Dr. Mitchell's program and Roper St. Francis and I truly could never have made a better choice. I Had Excellent care all the way around. My first step was to have my blood work done. When I was called back to register , they lady in the office was so kind and when I told her that I was a self-pay patient she gave me papers to apply for assistance (which she did not even have to mention) She said I don't think the help with this kind of procedure but it won't hurt to try. I had already saved most of the money for my surgery so it was a go either way. I filled out the paperwork and sent it in... Not expecting any help I just forgot about it and went on with the process of attending my other pre-op appointments that I needed to attend before my
Surgery. One of the last appointments before my surgery was to have my endoscopy. The anestisia dept is exceptional and it could not have gone more perfect... very, very smooth.
Dr. Mitchell also sent me for a very thorough cardiac clearance to make sure that it was safe for me to have surgery as I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. meanwhile I got a letter back from the hospital ...they do not cover gastric bypass however they signed me up for 100% care of anything that my insurance does not pay... in anything other than cosmetic or bariatric surgery. No place has ever been so kind and caring ...I will never go to another hospital. Someone always calls after any care that I am given to ask how I was treated and how I am feeling. My surgery is next. Once again my anesthesia was PERFECT! Can you believe that after a surgery like Gastric Bypass I was never nauseated...NOT once! My experience could not have been any better! A perfect experience I never dreamed that every detail could possibly be so perfect and exceptional. I am Very grateful and very blessed to have been given this incredibly awesome experience. I have not had one single problem. Thank you all so very much for giving me my life back! Oh yeah ...Did I mention when I left the hospital I also left my insulin and both of my blood pressure medications!!!!!!!! ALL Gone!!!! God Bless You Dr. Mitchell! Thank you for all that you do. Love to you and all at Roper St. Francis! Felicia Smith

I am 9 years post op this August from Pinehurst hospital in NC. As a seasoned Registered Nurse, I feel it essential to let you know who and what Dr. Mitchell is all about! You see I did my homework prior to going to work for the hospital. I knew I wanted to work with the post op gastric bypass patients and I wanted exclusive coverage on the inside track on Dr. Mitchell. I weighed 450lbs give or take a few so I wanted the surgery. After a approximately a year and a half I was thoroughly convince I would not be in any better hands, post op care, or follow up care. If I could give this (savior; because he did save my life) more gold stars on this review I would. His competency and bedside manner are impeccable. I even put my younger sisters life in his hands as she too a couple of years later had the very same procedure with extraordinary results as well. They say you should also speak about the negativity's. Well I did have a longer time with nausea post op. I didn't even want to swallow my spit. I also had a hard time at first eating enough protein to even lose any weight. My sister also had a post op lower GI bleed due to a NSAID pain medicine which was stopped and she was fine. Now these are some risks you take but when these happened Dr. Mitchell or his colleagues are right on top of it to handle the situation. I hope this helps some of you in your search.

Dr Mitchell and his staff are all AMAZING. Everyone did a great job in getting me ready for the surgery, both medically and through education, and everything went suprisingly well! I am incredibly impressed by this man's surgical/medical skills and his compassion, and I HIGHLY (and often) recommend him to everyone I know who are candidates for his services.

One of the aspects of his practice that I like the most is the fact that he considers aftercare just as important (if not more so) as any other aspect of this journey. The practice is relatively new (though he is experienced at a previous location), and they are always looking for and open for suggestions on ways to improve the patient experience.

If I could have this doctor handle ALL of my medical care, I would! I've met a lot of doctors in my time, and this one is absolutely at the top of the list!

.... it also doesn't hurt that he's incredible kind, not to mention nice to look at during your appointments... both of us are going to be so embarrassed if he ever reads this, but hey, I call it as I see it! :)

I have known Dr. Mitchell since 1998 and helped him start the Bariatric program in Pinehurst. He is one of the best surgeons and persons I know. He is so compassionate to his patients and that is why everyone loves him. He is an encourager, a listener and he is very funny also. He cares about the patient. I trust him with my life and I did when I had surgery Oct. 3rd, 2011 and also drove 3 and 1/2 hours to Charleston and stayed 18 days for recovery. My experience has been great and if I had to do it over again I would. Since I made up my mind January 2011 to have the surgery and started dieting in June 2011, I have lost 93 pounds but have lost 63 pounds since surgery. I feel the best I have felt in almost 10 years or more. My hospital stay was great and everyone has been great to me.

To comment on previous poster. In less than 12 months of doing surgeries, RSFH Bariatric program has been awarded Center of Excellence status by the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic surgeons. They got this rating for excellent surgical and post-op care with minimal complications.

As a patient I can tell you my care pre-op, intra-op, and post-op from Dr. Mitchell and his staff has been excellent. Dr. Mitchell goes above and beyond good medicine, even giving patients his personal cell number on discharge from hospital, should they need him.

My care at Saint Francis hospital was excellent as well.

Would not recommend this practice to anyone. If considering, please do your homework as the office at Roper St. Francis has ONLY BEEN THERE since January 2011. The office is COMPLETELY incompetent and I slowly found much of what they boasted in the initial seminar was untrueand or misleading.

Initially, the staff was impressive. However, as weeks turned into months, I noticed many inaccuracies in my paperwork. It came to the point where I became frustrated with the staff because of the once kind and impressionable people, were now rude and "didn't have time for me because we are now busy" This is a direct quote from one of the nurses. Thanks a lot guys. This was a complete waste of time but I'm SO fortunate to have found someone with much more practice and a MUCH better reputation.

I strongly feel the office staff reflects the surgeon. I found them to be rude and clueless. Fortunately had enough time to find someone else to do mine. PLEASE USE CAUTION and do your homework.
