Paul Batty Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
What I liked about Dr. Batty was that he shared all the goods and bads about the operation. Did not try to persuade me at any time that this was a walk in the park. He stressed that WLS was a tool not a gaurantee to lose weight. I was originally approved for WLS last year at this time but my insurance changed and had to go through everything over again and I am now approved again. I have one more pre-op test tommorrow morning and then can schedule my surgery. Dr. Batty makes you feel comfortable when you least feel comfortable. He is up front with everything so there is no deception. He doesnt beat around the bush and gets right to the point of answering your question, which is what we patients want anyway. I only saw Dr. Batty once and that was 3/8/04 and he had my PCP get started on the approvals. With my back problems, severe sleep apneia, and weight. The insurance came back after a day with the approval, no arguements. I will be checking back in after my surgery and telling all about it.
I first Dr Batty on 02-25-03, and he was very nice and pleasant. As for as impression has not changed, because I only seen him once. I really liked his office staff they were all so nice and I am currently waiting to hear from Gerri the insurance specialist, She did send out a letter to BCBS PPO .(waiting) is so hard. Nothing really. He is very nice and very thorough about the surgery. I have recommended my daugter and a Rev to him. He did give me thorough consultation on before,
during and after process. He stated to me that it's not a quick and he is giving the tool to help me loose 100 lbs. And it's up to me to follow the rules and guidelines of the procedure. Yes he did discuss the risks of surgery and I would have to say at this point and time I would give an overall rate of 8.9+, and I when I have my surgery I will have to rate him again. I can only say consultion, no surgery date set as of yet!
Dr. Batty is very knowledgable, kind and understanding. He takes time to hear your concerns, answer your questions, provide vital info to you be sure that you undersatnd the info he is providing for you.He is also very thorough in your pre-op exam and testing.
He also has a good sense of humor..which is important to me.:)
The office staff are very friendly and eager to help you in any way.
Aftercare was discussed initially on the first visit. He informed me what his expectations and my responsibility to this procedure are. He added that I would learn everything I need to know before leaving the hospital and by trial and error (diet tolerance).
I only have great things to say about he and his staff. He is a competent surgeon. He saved the life of someone at our church who was in critical condition. This persons recommendation and the info I have gathered personally on him give me the greatest of confidence that I am in great hands.
I believe surgical competence is the most important factor for me. However, bedside manner can make a difficult situation a whole lot easier for everyone involved. I have no desire to have a surgeon who has the personality of a rock...:)
Sincerely,
Angie Bostic
I thought he was nice enough, I only saw him one time on November 1st. He was very thorough in going over the risks associated the bypass surgery. His office staff was very nice.
1/7 well I was finally approved for surgery after a denial. Geri the scheduler was very nice to me and helpful with answering my questions . Dr.Batty did send in a letter for the appeal. My surgery date is Feb. 7th 2003.
1/22/03 I talked to Dr. Batty today, he called me in response to some questions I had. He was very nice, and he answered all of my questions. I felt so much better after talking to him. I guess I am getting a little nervous, my surgery is only 16 days away.By the way his office staff is so nice about giving him messages, they don't ever sound annoyed. After talking to him, I feel confident about him doing my surgery.
2/20 Well I had my first post op visit with Dr.Batty on the 18th, he was soooooo nice, I feel very comfortable with him. He answered all my questions, and did not rush me in any way at all. I feel great so far, and am healing up well. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to have WLS.

He was very thorough about the risks
Too early to tell
I met with Dr. Batty on 1/10/03. I was impressed with the fact that he spent 45 minutes with me, answering all of my questions. I had done much research on RNY and was loaded with questions.
He presented me with some very informative literature (which I passed on to my husband who's still not convinced this is the thing to do).
Dr. Batty said he does hook his patients up with a dietician after surgery, and that he requires close follow-up for at least 2 years. He admitted that the one shortcoming in his practice is a lack of support group after treatment.
I'm looking forward to a surgery date and will definately proceed with Dr. Batty.
Excellent Surgeon, explained everything in detail. Office staff is great about having someone call you if you have a question. Gave list of foods to eat after surgery, and foods to eat after 3 weeks after surgery. Very happy with doctor and his staff. I have stopped taking insulin shots and am now reducing the medication I take by mouth.
Well on 10/3/02 I went to see Dr. Batty for my first appointment. After waiting in the waiting room for a very long time(he had an emergency)I was very impressed with him. He seemed to be a very caring and concerned doctor. He seemed to really care about this issue. He stressed that it was a serious decision to make. After several questions on both our parts, I felt that he was the doctor for me. He is planning to have a support group in the very near future, just in time for my surgery! His staff was very nice and friendly. The only thing I would like to suggest is that he have a few chairs in the waiting room without arms. I was extremely uncomfortable while I was waiting.
I met Dr. Batty today. I walked in the office and a man was sitting there, it was a small reception area, about 8 chairs and the desk. I had everything I needed and signing in was a breeze. When the man was called back the nurse came out and cheerily said Hi Scott blah blah blah, then I could hear the Dr and he was just as friendly. Good. I sat in the room and not long after the Dr. came in with an entarage. It was Dr. Batty a medical student named Thomas, man is he CUTE and the nurse. She stood by the door, Dr. Batty sat on one of those little chairs they use and Thomas stood next to the bed. They explained the surgery, what it would effect and entail and then gave me a brief physical. He said I am an ideal candidate and sent me on my merry way. I have a few tests to undergo and Ill be set. I cant think of anything I liked least, maybe that I felt somewhat like he didnt think Ive done enought thinking about this and that he felt he should pinpoint everything 3-4 times. His staff is very nice. He is very conservative with the surgery his aftercare sounds like a good one, I hope I can drink liquid for 3 weeks LOL. He fully explained the risks involved and kept referring back to them to drive home the possible complications. Overall I would give him on a scale of 1-10 an 8. Okay I am post op now and Dr. Batty was WONDERFUL! He has an intern named Thomas who came in bright and early everyday and asked if I wanted to go jogging yet :O) Between the two of them I spent a great part of my stay laughing! When I would ask if something would hurt his token reply was " it almost never hurts me "
All in all I rate him a 9, he could have visited more in the early AM hours, he liked to come while I was attempting to sleep :O) I debated the best of the bedside mannor or surgical competence and I have to say BOTH are equally important!
I was very impressed with Dr.Batty. He took his time to answer my questions and encouraged questions regarding the surgery. His office staff was also very friendly and helpful with the refurals. He treated my obesity an an medical illness not a weakness, I would recomend hiim to anyone. He was honest ans stright forward about the risks of my surgery.Overall I'd rate him very good.He has great surgical compentence as well as a great bedside manner.
The only area which I'd consider negative would be his teaching about the follow-up on dietary needs after surgery. I have gained that knowledage from books and on line here. No dietary consult was made.
