The fist time tht I met Dr. Cooney was at an informational in January of 2003. I felt so alone and that my situation was all my fault well you know the feelings. I felt that there was know hope for me. As Dr. Cooney went pass my chair with a big smile he said Hi! and reach out and patted me on the arm. That was all that it took for me to feel as though someone cared. That gave me the insentive to call for an appointment and to get started on what I needed to do to get on my way to recovery. He does not tell you that it is easy but he encourages you. Well may 5,2003 was my big day and I have been encouraged ever since. My weight loss is considered slow but I have lost 70 lbs. and I feel great. I had absoutly no problems. I became lactose intolerant but I can handle that.
I feel that Dr. Cooney is a very competent surgeon. His staff excpresses the risks of surgery and emphasizes the need for aftercare. In fact on your last visit before surgery you are given a ture false test to make sure that you understand the risks of the surgery and your responsibilities to change your life style. I feel that Dr. Cooney is doing a great service for the hospital, community and his patients and their families. I appreciate his time. talent and ability to make me a more productive person. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Dr. Cooney, is by far the most UNDERSTANDING, reasonable, kind soul anyone would have the pleasure of meeting. I don't know how a person who is not obese himself have so much concern and empathy for the obese person.

One my first visit he explained everthing to me, the procedure, the risk, what he expected would happen, and everything that he discussed was very clear to me.

My surgery was a success and now I just had a consult with him for PS and he gave me his input. I feel that it was just yesterday that I saw him for surgery. I did have some questions in the 2 yrs I was post-op and they were answered, I was not forgotton. He is amazing. There is not ONE bad, or something so small that is against his character. He is still in my prayers.

First impression is excellent! He was kind, thorough and a true professional. Give me 100% faith in my decision to have this surgery.

Even after the informational session, Dr Cooney was all that he seemed from the beginning.

The staff at HMC are wonderful and professional.

Future patients should know they are in the best medical hands in the Central Pennsylvania Area.

Before - during and after care (haven't had aftercare - but it is there for me after 04-23-2003)is perfect. The nutitionist is there before and alllll the way.

The surgeon detailed EVERY possible risk including the possibility of death. The physician's assistant also reviewed those risks and did so at different times.

Overall - Has to be the best in this area. Heard horrow stories about other surgeons - but -------none ----from the Hershey Medical Center.

Will answer the lst questions after April 23, 2003.

My first impression of Dr Cooney, was confidence
and nothing has every changed in that respect.
I feel that he is one of the best surgeons in
the country and have recommended many people to
him. His staff is very good. But the problem
now is that the time demands are so great that
you see less and less of him. New patients should
know that this process will take quite some
time so if you are considering this make your
appointments now because it may be 6 or more months
until you can get a surgery date. The initial
aftercare program is great but as time goes by
there is less and less aftercare and unfortunately
the hospital based support group puts an
over-emphasis on pre-op and newbies so once you
are 3 months post op they really don't have
much to offer.

I felt the program lets you know all of the
risks and benefits, and I would rate this
overall program a 9 out of 10.

Dr Cooney is not the physician who performed my original RNY on June 13, 2001. But after negligence from my original surgeon, I was taken out of Lancaster Regional Med Center and rushed to Hershey Med Center. Dr Cooney was there in the ER and begin working on my long journey of repairing the damage done to me back in Lancaster. Dr Cooney is Chief Trauma Surgeon of Hershey Med Center and also performs "open" RNY surgeries there. His surgery skills are impeccable. God and Dr Cooney literally saved my life. He's an extremely busy man but you will never be made to feel that way. He cares for all his patients. All those residents he teaches, all those surgeries he performs, and he takes time to attend almost all the WLS support meetings. I just don't know how he does it all, it just amazes me. I have nothing negative to say about Dr Cooney. I have a great deal of respect for him and would recommend him to anyone!
***** Ok I gotta say this too, he's very charming! :)

I agree 100% with all the previous comments on Dr. Conney. He was very patient and has a great bed side manner. I would highly recommend him.

My first impression of Dr. Cooney was that he must have been a fat man in a former life! He is very aware of the special needs of a morbidly obese person. What really impresses me is the time he will take to explain things to you. I am about to undergo a revision, and during my last visit he took out a pen and drew the entire surgical procedure out on the tissue paper that covers the examination table! He made DOUBLE sure that I did not have any unanswered questions before he left the room. I feel that I have finally found a surgeon that I can trust and respect.

Dr. Cooney was wonderful from the first time I met him. Very down to earth, very concerned that you understand all the risks and complications associated with this surgery. The WLS program at Hershey Medical Center is VERY comprehensive and has a monthly support group meeting where a nutritionist and surgeon are always available to talk with you. Also, they have a group web site so it's easy to find commonalities with others and keep in touch with everyone. There isn't anything negative I found about Dr. Cooney - just his schedule is hectic: he is chief of trauma and critical care, in addition to being in charge of the WLS program. So he has vast experience where it matters for me!
