    Dr. William Richards, Bariatric Surgeon William Richards, MD, FACS is a nationally recognized bariatric and general surgeon serving as the Director of Bariatric/Laparoscopic Surgery and the Professor and Chair of Surgery at the University of South Alabama Center for Weight Loss Surgery in Mobile. Dr. Richards earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and completed his residency at the University of Maryland Hospital. He went on to complete a surgical fellowship at Emory University and a research fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Soon after his fellowship training, he was appointed as Ingram Professor of Surgical Sciences and Director of Laparoendoscopic Surgery and the Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Weight Loss. Board-certified, Dr. Richards is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the American Surgical Association (ASA), the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the Southern Surgical Association (SSA). Dr. Richards previously served as the President of the Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (TNACS) where he was actively involved in creating the Tennessee Surgical Quality Consortium (TSQC). Dr. Richards has served on multiple prestigious boards and is the recipient of many awards including the Nightingale Prize from the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. He is active in medical research and has authored many abstracts and articles. He is known by his colleagues as a dedicated clinician, teacher, and researcher.
