  • About Me

    Dr. Sharp, a Virginia native, earned his undergraduate degree at Duke University. He  completed his medical degree and surgical training at Emory University in Atlanta and returned to Duke for a fellowship in bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery.

    Dr. Sharp is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UNC/Rex Hospital and Medical Director of Rex Bariatric Specialists. He has been the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery services at Rex Healthcare from 2010 until 2020.  He is excited to further expand the Excellence in Bariatric care at Rex Hospital.

    Dr. Sharp is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He is a current Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has performed research on various topics including outcomes of weight loss surgery, predictors of diabetes resolution after bariatric surgery, revision of bariatric surgery, exercise physiology, and renal failure.  He, along with his partner Peter Ng, MD, developed a reliable, low-risk technique for performing the Duodenal Switch procedure.  They have presented several videos and research abstracts and delivered many talks at the national Obesity Week conference and for physicians in the North Carolina/South Carolina region to educate them on advanced bariatric techniques and care.
