SURGICAL OPTIONS

Gastrointestinal surgery for obesity, also called bariatric surgery, alters the digestive process so that patients lose weight safely and effectively. Operations can be divided into three types: restrictive, malabsorptive and combined restrictive/malabsorptive. The Center for Weight Loss Surgery offers three laparascopic bariatric surgical options. You and your physician will decide what is best for you.

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – a combined restrictive/malabsorptive procedure that reduces the stomach to the size of a small pouch; and a portion of the intestine is bypassed reducing the amount of food consumed and absorbed. A short hospital stay is required and most people return to their normal activities in three to five weeks.
  • Gastric Banding – a restrictive operation in which a band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to decrease the amount of food the stomach can physically hold oand does not interfere with the normal digestive process. Weight loss is achieved by decreased food intake.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy – a restrictive bariatric surgery procedure in which the surgeon creates a small, sleeve-shaped stomach about the size of a banana. Patients who undergo the sleeve gastrectomy experience resolution of co-morbid conditions at similar rates to those who undergo other restrictive procedures.

da Vinci Robotic Assisted Weight Loss Surgery – potentially the least invasive option available. The da Vinci Robot allows surgeons to perform bariatric procedures using only a few small incisions. For most patients, da Vinci Robotic Assisted Weight Loss Surgery can offer numerous benefits including:

Significantly less pain Fewer complications A shorter hospital stay

Less blood loss Less scarring A faster return to normal daily activities

According to a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, patients who undergo bariatric surgery are five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years.
