Staten Island University Hospital (North Site) Hospital
My major problem with this hospital was Dietary- granted it was a weekend, but my surgeon said I could go home once I kept down some yogurt. They brought me up 4 different yogurts all containing either High Fructose Corn Syrup, or Fruit pieces. Dietary has to get on board with the bariatric surgery plan.
This was my first time in as a "guest" at any hospital. I must say my surgery group took us for a tour of the ward we would be in post surgery and we met the nurse managers on the floor and this was extremely beneficial. We were treated as VIP's. This is big business for hospitals and they want our insurance money. We are very good customers and we need to demand good service. This hospital alone did 12 WLS surgeries in the month of June. At at least 35K per surgery that is big business annually a few million yearly. We need to realize that we are a huge customer base and embrace the idea. This hospital had over sized beds which were quite comfortable as well as oversized wheel chairs which helped. I also had an extra large recliner in my room which was quite nice Overall experience was excellent.
For the most part my esperience was fine except when I had to go for my upper GI. It was the next day after surgery and I still felt like I couldn't move. They had to swing me unto the table which scratched my legs. That wasn't even the worst part they left me their for what seemed to be eternity on a very uncomfortable table, finally they did the test which was also very uncomfortable. The guy wanted me to move into positions on my side that was extremely painful. Then when it was time to go back after waiting for still awhile I heard them complaining that they didn't want to hurt themselves to put me back on my bed. I only wieghed 270 at the time. Although that is alot, there are many men who weigh around that amount. I was appalled. Imagine if I wieghed more. I felt very uncomfortable and was practically at tears. A few other minor complaints is that it also took me a long time to get a room from recovery. My surgery was at 7:30 and I went into my room after 5. The room that they put me in was extremely hot b/c the other patient was by the window and she was cold. I never sweat so much in my life, it took them to the next evening to switch my room after my family was also complaining. I am also asthmatic so this was a major issue for me. Some nurses and staff where great but I did feel neglected at times in the recovery room and my own room. It was clear that the hospital was extremely under staffed. Wanting pain medication and ringing for assistance in my own room and not getting it, I worked myself up into an anxiety attack and then an asthma attack. The nurse was helping the patient next to me but ignored me and b/c of the asthma I couldn't call out to her. Finally when they realized it, I had 2 nurses at my side. It also seemed like I was more experienced about the surgery then some of the nurses were.
I had my surgery in March 17, 2003. I thank GOD that I had my entire family with me going in. In fact, I had a total of 35 family members visit with me during my stay at SIUH. My mom and my two daughters took turns staying overnight with me. If it wasn't for my family being there to take care of me, I highly doubt if the staff would have been as attentive as they were to me. I was treated like royalty! It was amazing. The surgical staff is excellent, however the nursing staff need attitude adjustments. They are very nasty and unprofessional. I watched how they mistreated other patients, and I felt sorry for them. Again I was treated greatly because my family saw too it that I was not mistreated. I would only recommend this hospital if a person has a very strong support group to make sure that they are well taken care of. The other downside I could speak of is the fact that this hospital followed me through my entire pre-op phase, but after the surgery, it was like being put out into the world with no where to go - this is not a great feeling at all.
The OR and recovery staff were a God send!!! My OR nurse took such good care of me and went 100% above the call.
The floor staff was great except for the Saturday shifts. Now the problems... The Transport Staff should have beed fired. When I went from recovery for my leak test they treated me like a sack of goods. they hit every corner, nearly pulled out my lines and at one point, crashed my bed into a doorway, fullstop. They hurt me so bad I thought I was going to die and as much as the nurse that was there with me tried to make them slow down and be carefull, they refused.
