GERD and WLS

I am pre-op and waiting for approval for my WLS/Sleeve.  Just wondering if anyone has had the surgery and also has GERD.  I want to make sure I'm not going to create more issues by having the surgery...

I wanted the sleeve initially, but after being diagnosed with GERD, my surgeon talked to me about the pros and cons and together we decided that RNY would be a better fit for my situation.

Hope you can find the info you want. Good luck to you!

GERD is the reason that many people, like me, have RNY instead of the sleeve. RNY resolves GERD while the sleeve can make it worse. In fact some people end up needing a revision from the sleeve to RNY because of this problem. I was not willing to take that chance.

Count me as another that wanted the sleeve, but was advised against it due to GERD. I would do more research if you are scheduled for the sleeve, but have acid issues. Have you had an endoscopy to rule out any existing acid damage?

I have had a couple of endoscopy procedures from my Gastro Doctor.  I will continue with the research...thank you for your input!!

I had severe GERD for 25 years due to an old VBG surgery.  I revised to RNY 5 years ago and have not had a reflux episode since.  RNY cured the GERD.  The sleeve has been known to  make GERD worse.  For that reason, many surgeons will not do the sleeve surgery if you have a history of reflux disease.

Thank you so much for your feedback...it is greatly appreciated!!  Can you tell me what VBG and RNY stand for?  Still have a lot to learn, lol

VBG is Vertical Banded Gastroplasty.  It's an old surgery that is no longer done because of the high complication rate.

RNY is Roux 'N' Y.  A lot of folks refer to this surgery as a gastric by-pass.

VSG is Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.

WLS is used as an abbreviation for any weight loss surgery
