UPPER LIMITE OF CARB CONSumption
D, you might do much better if you just cut the carbs and tell yourself it's temporary. Because it is. Will it be OK with you if you stop losing 60lbs short of your goal? I think that's the real question here. When the window closes, you can still lose weight but it is hard work. Just like it was before. If you just lose the weight first, it's done and all you need to worry about is maintenance.
I know we eat well and there are lots of people *****ached their goal eating protein + whatever. But not all of us are that lucky. There are a few and far between people who never lost any more after 6 months. There's no way to tell in advance where you will end up. That's why I tell every single person who asks this question to just lose the weight first. Then you can find out how many carbs YOU can eat and stay in those skinny jeans.
Right now, you are only 8 days post-op. It's your job now to heal and learn about your new body. Eat whatever you can tolerate that's within your surgeons guidelines. If that's mashed potatoes and gravy, fine. Learn to get your fluids in. You have a lot to cope with right now. Weightloss comes after you heal.
The most accurate answer you can get for that question is:
"Individual results may vary"
Here's my easy way, though. I never counted carbs -- only protein to make sure that I got my 100g each day. Focus on your protein and if you're going to eat anything, eat that first, then a little bit of veggies with a touch of fruit. These are complex carbs, and you're malabsorbing about 40% of them (not so much with the fruits, because of the sugars). Finally, with what little room you have left, eat whatever more carbs you want. For the first 6 months or so, it's only going to be a few bites so it's no big deal. Along the way as I was able to eat more, I was mindful of how much simple carbs I was eating, but not so anal that I was counting grams or anything.

Exactly like Val, I didn't count carbs during my first year postop, since you do malabsorb a good chunk of carbs that you eat. One thing with me though, I did develop massive headaches and was told to UP my carb intake because the brain feeds off of carbs only as a fuel source. I couldn't figure out why I was getting so many headaches and it was when they seen my food log that they noticed my carb was too low about 25-45 a day. I couldn't eat much during that time. I was told if I have a MINIMUM of 50g of carbs daily, the headaches would go away and they did.
But, honestly, I never paid attention to carbs, calories or fat because we do not absorb most of it anyway, especially during that first year since our metabolism is quite fast and we cant eat much. I didn't have much simple carbs and obtain most of my carbs from veggies and other food that i was able to eat. Concentrate more on getting in all your protein that you are required and stay hydrated.

I have only recently stopped being super paranoid about my carbs and that's because I'm close to goal and only 4 months out. If I notice it's doing harm then cutting back will happen in a flash!!!!! When I was watching I was under 50 grams a day.
ETA: My tracker isn't even accurate right now as I only weigh ever few weeks and I'm due for a WI next week and I know that I've lost based on my clothes and new jewlery.

You're 8 days out. You had a HUGE surgery from which you need to heal. Stop thinking about how to push the envelope regarding weight loss and concentrate on healing from surgery. For that your body needs, fluids, fluids, enough movement to promote good circulation, fluids, some protein, fluids and adequate rest.
As you heal and start eating more, your focus needs to be PROTEIN. If you follow this, the single most important DS "diet rule," you aren't going to have room for carbs for quite some time. This rule is about preserving your health, not about maximizing your weight loss.
It's time to get your head around the fact that you have, to a degree, "medicalized" yourself for life. You MUST eat adequate nutrition for your changed body. There will be time enough to eat carby treats. First you need to learn to eat for your new nutritional realities. Once you are able to do that, you can add in other things. But for the rest of your life, you MUST nourish your body.
There is no such thing as an "upper level limit of carbs" that anyone can say with any degree of authority. You'll do yourself a big favor if you drop that thinking entirely and start focusing on, "fluids, fluids and more fluids" as you recover from surgery, then "protein first and foremost forever, followed by everything else."

This is sooo true!

I always liked breads and carbs prior to surgery. I thought it would be hard to give it up but honestly it's not. In fact I have to force myself sometimes to eat it because it fills me up WAY to fast. I was so low with my carbs I had a major stall a few weeks out and the nutritionist asked me to try and add more carbs...ironic huh?... to see if it would break the stall. Sure enough it did I am 62 lbs down in 3 1/2 months which is 51.6% of my goal already. I am not even to 6 months out yet. I have went from a 24W to a 14 in this time also. Don't worry to much right now keep the advice on how to eat that Lori said and you will be fine. Along with everyone eles's. You will figure out how you can tolerate things in a while. Right now it is hard enough to get the vits and protein in this early out.
Good Luck!
Early out I ate sugar free Jello pudding cups. Taste good. Use them to take the crushed meds, too. I like them and I know I could have done better but at first you have to just get something in you can handle. Gravy was one of those things. I like soup but the sodium is a problem. I retain water so I eat low sodium things. It would be best to make your own soup. I was eating yogurt but that is too high in carbs for me.
What I say is what most of them say here: don't worry early post op. It is hard to find things at first you can eat. When you do go with it. I like the Jello sugar free Butterscotch pudding for taking those bad tasting pills.
I don't know what the amount of carbs should be but probably keep them as low as possible.
My other daily thing is Sugar free Kool aid Cherry. For some reason this really agrees with me. I keep some in the fridge and some in the freezer so I can take them along to appointments and so on.
TV dinners work Ok. I use them and eat the meat and gravy and a little of the potatoes and some carrots.
