Is the DS lifestyle good for those around you too?

This question sometimes gets flat out asked here, and other times we come under fire on the main forum for our hedonistic ways with bacon and sour cream (among other tasty things).

I frequently counter this with the real life true story of my husband. Who in March of 2009 decided to modify his diet to more mirror my own future diet (high protein, low carb, low sugar, high fat) in order to lose the excess weight HE was carrying around as a show of support and to get himself healtheir.

There are THREE marked differences in our diets 1. He eats WAY more than me. Beyond way more, I will take my tiny slice of cheeseburger bacon meatloaf or my ONE AND A HALF bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers and he will all but finish off the rest of what is made. 2. He drinks LESS protein shakes daily than I do (he has one every morning and that's it) 3. He eats WAY more white flour or sugar than I do because he does so without repercussions.

Here is what my husband looked like at 270 lbs in March 2009 and a month or so following:
(yes the tattoo changes he stood the other way so I flipped the image)

Here he is a week ago at 180:

The proof is in the sugar free pudding so to speak.

I'm pretty sure bacon tastes as good as thin feels!

Holy cow!! I need to show this to my husband. When I asked him last week, what I can do to help him with his weight loss, he told me to stop eating bacon. He was joking. There is still hope for him.

Wow, that's wonderful.    My hubby is in his 60s and not very active.   He hasn't lost any weight to speak of but his lipid panels are better than they were.   So that's pretty cool, too.

Yeah hubs hasn't really increased his activity, he works as much, sits around as much, doesn't participate in aerobic excercise or anything,  only about at the start of november did he start adding a crunches routine to his day because he wants to have less flab and more fab abs. XD

Congrats to your hubby and to you!

I think the DS has helped my whole family. My mom is always looking for extra protein in everything, and that's VERY helpful for my dad who was NPO for nearly 6 weeks and 3 surgeries and is now trying to build up his strength. She told me she wouldn't have thought about protein so much if it hadn't been for my surgery.

Dh has lost pounds (not sure how many, but noticeably) and his portion sizes are smaller. He makes better food choices and looks for lower carb options. That's great because he's a diabetic. His A1C has also gone down 2.5+ points in the last 3 months.

DD would say she's benefited from all the delish (low to no sugar) goodies we've been whipping up in the kitchen! (obviously, since she's only 4, she's not low carbing it)

Oh, and because I'm more active, so is my family (taking walks, and my dd exercises to my zumba tapes with me sometimes)

Wow!  That's really cool.  I wonder if it's having an Atkin's type of effect on him.

Your photographic proof is spectacular -- props to your DH.

Now, for a more general answer.

What difference does it make?  It makes NO difference, certainly not a negative one, because EVERYONE has a different diet that is right for them, and everyone in the family probably should be eating somewhat differently.  Just because you put extra butter or mayo on YOUR servings doesn't mean everyone HAS to eat the same way.  My children were lactose intolerant when they were very young.  I can't STAND Lactaid or soy milk -- I drank regular, and they drank theirs.  I think it is MORE important that everyone -- even little kids -- understand that what is right for them is not necessarily what is right for others, and vice versa.

If you have a fat kid and a skinny kid, do you feed THEM the same??  I hope not.
