My stepdaughter went to her Dr today who is not supporting her for an RNY at Barix clinic. His reasonings  ..# 1-After care ...who is going to provide this?? He told her no one in Canada will touch her and that it would cost her a fortune to go back to the states and it would not be covered. He has now referred her to the Wharton Clinic in Hamilton ?? Anyone heard of this?? Dr Sharma and Dr Wharton?? are the bariatric Drs... Do they do the RNY there??  Any feedback would be appreciated as she is devastated. Thanks in advance
Cricket

Dr Sharma is no longer in Ontario,as far as Dr Wharton goes he's all about the optifast and not so much about the surgery,I seen him,I know.
You might want to try the Bariatric Clinic at the General Hospital here in Hamilton, here is the # 905-527-4322 Exten#46471 they will also provide aftercare as well, they are with me now.I hope that this has helped.

You could also try the MIS group of Drs. who work out of Humber Hospital in Toronto.  You can find them on the internet. Dr Hagen is the head however if you have him you'll wait for a while, maybe try Dr. Starr or Dr. Qunyh

Hope this helps.

Sharma is long gone from Hamtilon... in another province now...

Wharton is in Burlington at the Urgent Care Centre on Dundas @ Walkers Line -- but he is NOT a surgeon, just runs some program for weight loss and MAY sign off on OOC forms possibly... but all I have heard is like what Debbie has stated, I have never met the man myself.

RNY in Ontario is at available at:
Humber River in T.O.
St Joe's in T.O.
Dr Reed in Guelph

... quite long wait times but I do hear they are getting better...
There is no Bariatric surgeon in the Hamilton area at this point at all.  There is no DS surgeon available in Ontario...

Research going Stateside for WLS surgery -- RNY/gastric by-pass or the DS...
Try getting prior approval through OHIP (if you would like OHIP to foot the bill... you must have a doc sign the OOC forms and submit them for OHIP approval..
you must be: greater then 100 pounds over weight with a BMI of 35 to 40 WITH co-morbidities
or
BMI over 40 without co-morbidities.. but you may have to plead your case... and be sure your doc fills the form in correctly!!!)

LapBand is NOT covered by OHIP either in Canada OR the US.

Co-morbidities may be:

Diabetes
Hypertension
Elevated Cholestrol
Elevated Triglycerides
Heart Attack & Congestive Heart Failure
Cardiac Arrhythmias, Sudden Death
Stroke
Renal Failure
Pulmonary Artery Hypertension
Cor Pulmonale (right heart failure)
Lung restriction
Shortness of breathe on exertion
Decreased Exercise Tolerance
Asthma
Heavy Snoring
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Breast cancer
Prostate cancer
Colon cancer
Uterine Lining cancer
Heartburn (GERD)
Joint and back pain
Accelerated Degenerative Joint Disease
Gallstone formation
Hormone Abnormalities
Excess Estrogen
Abnornal Menstrual Cycle
Infertility
Excess Testosterone
Facial Hair
Acne
Stress incontinance
Varicose Veins
Leg, Ankle Swellings
Rashes, infections, excess sweating
Panniculitis (infected abdominal skin fold)
Nephrotic Syndrome
Hernias
Increased risk of certain cancers
Steatohepatitis (fat induced hepatitis)
Hypercoagulable States
Pulmonary embolism
Trauma
Gout
Lack of self esteem
Social rejection
Loss of job potential
Inappriopriate coping strategies
Depression
Anxiety

The good news is that most of these problems will improve as one loses weight through diet and exercise or through surgery such as gastric bypass. Even if irreversible damage has been done, such as joint breakdown, the damage will be easier to live with when one weighs less.
