Hello:
I have PCOS and was reading on the PCO board that VSG may not be the best choice of surgery for PCOSers? I am hearing that if you have PCOS and are insulin resistant that the RNY is a better choice because of the malabsorbtion. My thought is doesn't that stop after a while anyway (malabsorbtion)??? I really want to have the sleeve, but I don't want to have this surgery if I can't be successful with it because of my issues with PCOS.
Any experience you can share would be helpful.
Thanks
Stephanie

I'm a cyster - diagnosed when PCOS was still Stein Leventhal Syndrome (20+ years ago) and I'm a Sleever - surgery on 3/15. As you can see, the VSG is working for me...down 36 lbs as of this morning and since preop on March 1.
Sure, I may not be losing 25-30 lbs a month but I'm losing and that's what matters most to me!
I chose VSG because I didn't want any rerouting, malabsorption or foreign objects inside me. So far, so good!
Good luck to you!!

Yes, I have PCOS, and I have done great with my sleeve! Not the first problem. (I had lost all my weight and was easily maintaining until I got sick about a year and a half ago -- not WLS related at all -- and started eating poorly again.)
I don't mean to disparage anyone's surgery, but why would we want malabsorption??? I want to get full value from the food and medication I take, thanks all the same.
Best wishes on your journey :-)

Highest weight: 292 Pre-op weight: 265 Goal met: 150 Six years out: 185 and trying to lose again!
I have PCOS and am also doing the sleeve... my doctor says that much of the PCOS stuff is made better by weight loss, but that no surgery will make it all go away... some people luck out and all, but I am going into it assuming that I will still have many of the same everyday PCOS issues after I reach goal, I'll just be in a better position to deal with them...
HOWEVER, even if the irregular periods, infertility, hair and all stay the same, loosing the weight wil help imesnly with diabetes and cancer risks... (note, lower, not eliminate, risks).
I am haoy with that :-)

I have PCOS and the surgery has been a God send! I still take my Metformin (1000MG ER/ day) and I still have to be VERY careful with my carb/ sugar intake because is REALLY messes with the scale, but that's OK! I feel great, my periods have been coming normally, and we'll see if the infertility issues are any better once we start trying again. Best of luck to you with whichever choice you make, but know that the sleeve does work!
My friend has PCOS and she was sleeved this February. She's lost 45 pounds so far and is doing great. She's a light weight with a starting BMI of 35 and only need to lose another 15-20 pounds to be at goal.
Her doctors advised her to have the sleeve over the RYN due to the lack of malabsorption.
She's feeling great and losing weight.
Good luck,
George

I also have PCOS! Yesterday was my 3 month anniversary for my SLEEVE! Even though I feel I am losing slower then some, I am still losing!!!! I met with my Dr. & I will be taking Metformin again to see if it helps speed things up. I have been regular since Pre-Opt which is awesome. I knew I did not want any rerouting and any foreign objects in me, but needed to do something b/c dieting & exercising alone was not helping. I know its only been 3 months but love my SLEEVE!
Good luck with whatever you decide on.
