Was any one else told they would not be able to give blood after VSG?

My doc said no blood donation for 6 months.  After that I was cleared.

I still haven't - but good to know I can...

Before donating it is a good idea to have your iron, total iron binding capacity, and ferritin levels checked. If they're good, your surgeon might give the go ahead to donate. Hemoglobin/hematocrit don't always give the full picture, and that's typically all the blood mobile will check prior to allowing donation.

I'm all for donating! I needed several units of blood and blood product following my recent surgery, but you can't risk your own health if your body can't tolerate the blood loss well because your body isn't absorbing iron optimally.

I too had surgery with Dr Teel (love him!!!) And was told the same thing. I had surgery 4-16 and I just had my first set of labs post op come back and they were all great! With that being said, I am thrilled they came back great and with how much my body is going thru I am not trying to pu**** with donating blood!

I wonder why they tell us this.......Your only a little over three months out and your chemistries aren't  messed up.  I agree that with the small amount of food we are able to take in during the first six months, giving blood would be a bad idea but they state it as if its something you are going to have to deal with forever.  I don't know......  Glad to see your doing well.  Congrats on the labs!!

3 months huh?  Its sorta amazing how bariatric programs have such diverse ideas of what is the best.....from the pre-op diet, to size of bougie, to when its alright to give blood or that its never going to be alright to give blood.  Thanks for letting me know what your program advised.
