Not here, but my brother in law just had the fundoplication done because his esophagus looked like raw hamburger.  He doesn't need wls......so that is not in the future....but since his surgery 2 weeks ago, he has lost 14 pounds.  I don't know how long the weight loss will last.  His diet mimics that of a post op wls patients and will for 8-12 weeks minimum. I have to ask, would the procedure be done to fix a hiatal hernia or complications from GERD?  I am wondering if wls could even be done since the fundoplication involves taking the fundus of the stomach and wrapping it around the esophagus.  That is the same area that they use to make the pouch. The surgeon I work with has done several cases that he did the Nissen and then did the LapBand or Bypass.

  I've lost over 400 pounds!
I love helping others, if you have a question just ask!

I had the Nissan done a year before my bypass.... but due to the weight the Nissan failed to help me....  before the Nissan my acid was up to 106 % then a couple of months later when they rechecked me it was up to 98% .... it had gotten so bad that I would vomit the acid in my sleep and almost drown in it from it running into my lungs.... I'll be 2 years out in July and now I don't have all that acid but I do get heartburn sometimes.... Good luck Stephie PS if you need anything just PM me

I had my Nissan done in 1997.....and my RNY in 2007.....my surgeon simply reversed the Nissan and then did my RNY.  No heartburn or reflux for me!!!!!!!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

That makes sense to me that the Nissan would have to be reversed for an RNY.  I didn't make the original post, but I am glad you shared your experience. Missy

I had a Nissen fundoplication at Mass General Hospital in 1997 and I am looking into RNY now and very concerned about the extra complication.  It is nice to know that someone else survived this.   Thanks.  Sally

I am not sure if you had the RNY yet but you are right to be nervous. It is a veyr complicated procedure and it must be done by a very compitant surgeon.  Not all surgeons can do it but you are at the right hospital.  Mass general is a great hospital and I am sure you can find someone there that is qualified.  Make sure you ask alot of questions and make sure you specifically ask if they have done RNY after Nissan.  The Nissan will have to be reversed but dont' worry the reflux won't come back. I had the worst reflux ever - I was vomiting moutfuls of acid all day long for 6 weeks and lost 35 pounds in those 6 weeks because I couldnt' keep any food down and that is when they decided to do the nissan.  I lost all my top teeth.  I never had any reflux after that.

When I had the RNY - It took me 1 year and interviewing 5 surgeons to find my surgeon.  My surgery took 5 hours but it went great - I did have a tear in my esophagus when he went to take the wrap apart but he sewed it back up and I was on fluids for 3 weeks and all was fine.  I am on a PPI for life as  a precaution and I never have any heartburn.

Ashley,

As far as I was to understand....for the RNY to be done correctly, the Nissan has to be reversed.  But you should not have to worry about the heartburn coming back because part of the RNY takes care of that!!!!!!
I have had not one issue since I had my RNY done....been almost 17 months......not really anymore of a risk, just took a little longer in surgery because of the extra procedure time!!!!!

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you have anymore questions.....

Hugs, Holly
