Unjury "Opurity" Chewable Vitamins
Hi All,
I noticed that Unjury now has bariatric chewable multivitamins and calcium citrate chewables. They have ones for bypass patients and ones for band patients, on both of them they advertise that you only have to take one multi a day, which is great! The calcium you have to take 4 a day.
Has anyone tried these? Do they taste good to you?
I am currently taking centrum multi's 2 times a day and Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chews, I am pleased with both of them but I am always looking for different ones (especially if it means less pills I have to take a day.
I have compared the ingredients for the unjury multi with the Centrum and these items below were not included in the Unjury ones: Vitamin K, Potassium, Nickel, Boron, Phosphorus, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, Chloride, Silicon, Tin and Vanadium.
Are these missing vitamins listed above some that I definately need and should supplement if I choose to take the Unjury?
Thank you,
Tammy

Hi Tammy
Good questions. I like the taste, but I like MM's comment below as well.
We made decisions on each item separately, but some of the items have similar answers, so I grouped some.
We also hope to have the new opurity.com site up over the weekend, with detail about our formulation philosophy.
So let me address your list:
None of these 5 even have a Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI): Silicon, Tin, Vanadium, Nickel and Boron.
For the others, we need the nutrient, but it just happens in a wide range of diets, deficiency is quite rare.
The standard Centrum, according to Centrum.com on 4/21/10, has just these percentages of the RDI of some of these ingredients.
Chloride 2% (one side of the salt molecule)
Potassium 2%
Phosphorus 2%
Magnesium 13%
It is an interesting mineral. The more you intake, the less you absorb, and vice versa. Centrum has 13%, we have 20% We have more in our Calcium Citrate Plus.
Copper 25%
the Institute of Medicine "IOM" who sets the RDI's says: Deficiency is rare.
Vitamin K 31%
It is contra-indicated if one is on blood thinners, and deficiency is extremely rare.
Paraphrasing the IOM, it is almost impossible to achieve an intake of Vitamin K so low as to cause problems.
Separately, we don't believe you can buy Vitamin K in a form not mixed with Chinese ingredients.
Molybdenum 60%
IOM says: "A molybdenum deficiency has not been observed in healthy people" So why did Centrum include it?
Manganese 115% The data is so weak on the need for supplementation that the IOM did not set a requirement, just an adequate intake.
Does that help? We are happy to answer questions here, for the review of the entire audience, and you can always call us toll free during business hours,

UNJURY (R) Protein and OPURITY (tm) Vitamins
I have seen SEVERAL RNY copper deficiencies post RNY. Copper, zinc, and iron form a triangle.. these are supposed to be supplemented in a very specific ratio. By pulling one out, or by over-supplementing one, you are very likely going to create issues with one or both of the other two. Cupric deficiencies are not commonly tested until irreversible neurological damage has occurred (oops!) and zinc deficiencies can cause problems with protein absorption problems.
On Centrum now (which has vitamin K), I have a K deficiency, so it is entirely possible even with RNYers. With DS? It's not only reasonable, but COMMON. This is a problem that many that take the Centrum Silvers will face and must check as it does not have K either (as many of the senior population are on blood thinners).
There are also a great many RNYers with potassium issues post-op.. but they get their supplements in other ways. What's in a multivite wouldn't come close to fixing those issues.

I actually take one of the regular chewable Centrun and one of the silver Centrum chewable because taking 2 of the regular ones (twice the Vit K) was screwing up my protime (I've been on blood thinner for many years).
