On monday 9/26/2011, I had a sleeve gastrectomy.  I'm supposed to taking in 4-6 oz of fluids each hour. I am finding this difficult to do as it feels like the liquids are making their way around something in my upper chest & its kind of painful.  Has anyone else experienced this? I am afraid I'll get dehydrated.

it's hard to get in enough fluids at first so you have to work at it all day long.  experiment with different liquids and temperatures as some people like warm or tepid or ice cold. sip and wait sip and wait all day long. keep track.

if it is uncomfortable your sips are too big or too often. sip and wait, sip and wait.

are you on the VSG forum? you should be.

luckily, every day gets easier.  it took me a week of doing nothing else but sipping to get up to 64 ounces in a day but I did it. keep going.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

On my fourth day it took me 12 hours to get down 11 ounces of liquids. Try sipping a teaspoon of water every five minutes.

Just keep sipping- hydration is essential! I had to go to the ER for IV fluids once early out. Avoid that!

Hang tough- things will get easier!

The ability to drink fluids is a very common issue with post ops.  BUT, drink your fluids, taking your time to get in the required amount. Have a water bottle with you at all times of the day.  Dehydration is the number one reason post ops end up back in the hospital.  I had RNY in 2006 and my wife had a revision about 2 years later. She drank a lot of fluid prior to surgery, yet sitll had major issues drinking post op. She ended up back in the hosptial for 3-4 days at 10 days post op.  She was on fluids for DEHYDRATION. DAVE

I had this problem when I got the band (I now have the DS) and my sister is having the DS in a few weeks...so we planned ahead.

Most doctors recommend 64 ounces per day.  Here's the math.

Assume you sleep eight hours, that leaves 16 in which you are awake.

64 ounces divided by 16 hours = 4 ounces per hour.

4 ounces per hour = one ounce every 15 minutes.

So we assembled shot glasses for me and my sister will do the same...We have 15 minutes to empty a little tiny shotglass.

You can do that.  Hard at first and not fun...but you can do that.

IF YOU CANNOT...you may need to have someone hang a saline bag and rehydrate you...so try to get the water in and stay out of the doctor's office and ER.

I find it easier to tolerate warm beverages compared to cold.  Have you tried this?
