Why did I never hear of the DS back in 2001???
I only first ever heard of WLS period, when I went to visit a nutritionist about a medically supervised diet...

Man, I jumped on that faster than a big girl "secretly" runs for Birthday cake in the office...  :)

I"m ticked that I went through all of that, without knowing what I'm realizing now..  (sorry venting - AGAIN)

Seriously, I had everything from the:

faining spells
hypoglycemia
surgery again in 2004 my bowels had herniated themselves into my "old useless stomach"
1/2 dozen of bleeding ulcers
over a dozen of EGD's since then (I've stopped being susceptible to the meds they give you to relax, so I'm awake and gagging during the whole damn thing...)
Anemia
Vitamin D Deficiency
Etc...

Sorry, I'm just annoyed that I didn't know before what I THINK that I know now...

Pardon my premature nervousness, but is this the right thing to do???

Love,

Stina

Vent away-I'm right here with you (see my post www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/3821744/Things-I-wont-miss/ )
I went through most of what you have gone through, as have many people on this board.

I've done tons and tons of research this time vs nothing last time since there really wasn't any info available directly to me. I have every faith that the DS is everything everyone says it is and that it will be the best gift we ever gave to ourselves. So breathe a little easier if you can.

On a lighter note, I am on my 2nd day of my 2 week protein and eyeing up the dogs "Canine Carry-outs" LOL...even tho I have 12 more days to go, I wouldn't have it any other way. Hang in there and stay the course for your journey to DS- you won't regret it!

Love and Light to you,
Robin

Wow, you've really been through it.   I'm sorry you've had such a rough time!   I think, if they can't come up with a better sedative/anesthetic combo for your EGD's I'd withdraw permission until they figured something out!!   I know they do a lot to numb your throat and tongue, but if you're gagging and miserable, it's not quite enough!

I don't know if you're thinking of doing the right thing.   Nobody can tell you that but your own research and talking with your surgeon(s) and just working it all through in your mind.   The supplementation is a bit different, but I really think your quality of life would be better with the DS.

Have you found a surgeon who does revisions, yet?

Revisions are complicated.  Please be sure you get a very qualified DS surgeon who has done LOTS of revisions.  I'm so sorry you have had such a tuff time.  I can't say the DS is without possible complications, too, but do your research.  Everyday the WLS arena changes.  Longer common channels, smaller stomachs, faster weight loss and people getting to goal faster.  This is an every changing medical field.  I don't think 3-5 years ago, anyone had any idea that RNYers would gain back like they do.  It is like me being on Fen-Phen and loosing 100 lbs. only to find out I could have had serious heart problems.   I went off it, and my family was horrified when I started gaining again, but I did the right thing turns out.  Just be sure you do your homework!!!  Best of luck, Stina!

I know how you feel. I had my RNY back in 2000. One guy had a DS and everyone was curious but afraid of the DS because it wasn't as well known back then. Besides, my insurance didn't cover it at all back then.

If it did, I would have been a DSer a long time ago.

Sure i've had some complications, being a revision. But I prefer what the DS has done for me. I never dumped with the RNY, but one year out from it, I had to have a revision. Crazy. I was also told I would NEVER gain the weight back. HA !!!

I know it still comes down to eating, but at least with the DS I have more freedom and never have too worry about diabetes again.
