Topic: RE: What was harder post WLS...The physical side or the mental side of the surgery??
Great question, Brian. I'm not one to dwell on the past much. Even for something as life changing as my post WLS journey, it all kinda blurs on me. But I'd say the physical side. The first 10 days were tough. My entire midsection felt like I'd been beaten with an ax handle, I couldn't eat much without cramping, I couldn't drink much without cramping, and I was light headed most of the time if I stood up or tried to walk. But it subsided and by about day 11, other than the fact that I was still morbidly obese,  I felt like I had made the right decision. The first 6 months or so were pretty  miserable due to constipation. I'd always been able to **** like a pet goose, but there were many mornings during that first 6 months that I woke  up with a softball stuck up my ass and spent most of the morning trying to dislodge it without tearing my sphincter. I finally quit taking iron supplements and it let up. Everything's cool now. That's about the only physical problems I had. Every other physical aspect of post WLS life is mega-win.

I never really considered any of the mental aspects as being probematic. I liked the comments and questions from others on my weight loss. It is a bit of a ****** to be considered as being a more competent person now at 265, than I was at 455, but I understand. Cause you know what? I do it too. I really do.

I do pretty good during the week while I'm on a set schedule and working. My wknds have gotten to where they suck nearly as bad as they did pre-op. I ate friggin cinimon rolls and chocolate milk for breakfast yesterday. Felt like **** the rest of the morning. I gotta get back to protein, vegs, fruit, and water.

That's a hell of a deal, pardner. Staying level from year 1 to year 2 is a great accomplishment. It means you haven't backslid in to any of your old habits.  I'm about 17 lbs above my lowest and getting back there is going to take breaking some bad habits I've acquired over the last year or so. You can't exercise your way to weight loss, no mattter how hard and long you pu**** if you're consuming a 1000 calories of carbs per day. Trust me on that one.

Hang in there. It gets better. I'm about 2.5 years post op now and I fart with impunity. The only time I have to worry about a shart is if I've drank way to much beer.

I didn't drink at all for the first 6 months out. Wanted to maximize the loss during the window of opportunity and all that. Didn't drink much during the next 6 months. Here's something I read the other day on the intenet that I'll throw out there: Alcohol inhibits the production of HGH and thus if you're doing weight training and you're trying to recover and rebuild after a tough weight workout, you want to stay off the alcohol or you won't recover properly. Sore muscles just stay sore and don't recover and rebound the way you want them to. That one factoid alone has be limiting my beer drinking to once a week on an evening in which  I didn't work out that day.

Hey Dave,

I'm in wk 10 of p90x right now. I haven't lost much weight because I haven't consistantly worked at it, but I really like the firmness that I'm feeling under the fat. One of these days, I'll get mentally tough enough to take off that last 30 lbs or so and I'll be able to see the firmness rather than just feel it. My legs look better and feel better than they have since I was in my 20's. Shoulders and arms are coming along as well. I'm gonna do a second 13 wks this summer. Thanks for being the one to kinda put me on to this program.

Topic: RE: Old Habits Hard To Break
I looked up about 4 months out and realised for the first time ever, that I had the habit of reloading my fork while as soon as I emptied it. Because I was chewing everything very, very carefully at that point, I'd have to  hold the next bite of food on my fork for 30 secons or so before I could eat it. All of a sudden I realised that I'd been doing that for years, except that prior to surgery I'd have that next bite in my mouth a lot quicker. I forced myself for a while to put my fork down in between bites and not reload it until I had swalloed. Now that I'm 2 yrs 4 months out and can eat pretty much normally, I'm probably doing it again. I guess I ought to check on that and practice eating slower again.

I'm working pretty stinking hard at getting healthy and staying healthy right now. If government run healthcare looks anything like government run housing, and there's no logical reason to believe that there won't be a huge resemblance, then I want as little to do with health care providers as possible during the remainder of my life. I can forsee myself puting #4 buck through the roof of my mouth at some point in time as opposed to trying to survive on whatever pitiful amount of care Big Brother might choose to deem neccessary for me. In the free market a dead body represents lost revenue. In a govt run system a dead body represents a cost savings.

My wife didn't want to mess with it much when I was 450 and she was 150. Which was understandable. Now she doesn't want to mess with it much now that I'm 260 and she's 180. Which I don't understand as much. Going from being super-morbidly obese to being merely obese doesn't solve your bedroom problems. But it does allow you to reach your junk so that you can solve your own problems a little easier.

I went for 3 month and 6 month check ups. I was supposed to go at 1 year, but everything was so problem free that I skipped it. One of the factors was that I live 350 miles from where I had the surgery, so it was $100 in gas and a hard day's driving just to spend 10 minutes talking to the surgeons #1 assistant. Wasn't worth it.

Weighed 264 on the Friday before Christmas. Hadn't weighed since then until today cause I knew it was gonna be ugly. Been exercising hard the last 2 wks and got on the scale today.........and it read 271.4. So yeah it got ugly during my 2 wk Christmas break. But the great thing about being post RNY is it didn't get so ugly that I couldn't ever hope to repair what I did.

Interesting theory you got there.

I don't know that I'll test it any time soon, myself. I'm working real hard right now at walking that fine line between pushing myself as hard as I can in the P90X plyo and leg workouts and trying to keep my right knee from swelling up so much that I can't bend it at all. All my stuff is pretty low impact right now. I think eventually I'll get that knee scoped and cleaned out, and probably if I'd drop another 40 that would help as well. I'm still floating between 255 and 260 and at my age that's still a lot of weight on the knees.

Hey Dave,

Mostly because of your bizarre training stories a couple of years ago, I've purchased and started doing P90X. Everybody I know that has used it says, "I hate it, but I love it.", and that's kinda where I'm at. I'm on week three, did the plyo workout tonight. I was able to push myself quite a bit harder tonight than I did last wk and last wk was better than the first wk. I'm gonna weigh and measure tomorrow and see if there's any major change yet. I haven't really worked hard at changing my diet yet. That may come later after I'm more settled in to the routine. AT any rate, thanks for being the one who kinda got me started down this road.

PS. I haven't done a pull up or chin up since I was about 20. And I still haven't. But I'm getting closer.

You start getting big old scabs on your lower calves and ankles because there's not good enough circulation down there to maintain healthy skin repair.

You wash a bunch of **** out of your crack every time you shower cause you couldn't reach it when you wiped.

You try to walk a mile as a first step towards taking back your life and your hip joints feel like they need to be injected with AstroGlide during the last half of the trip.

You haven't seen your best friend (other than in the mirror) in years. If ya know what I'm saying and I think ya do.

Made it through the Chest & Back on Day #1 but had to cheat like hell on all the pull ups. LImped through the Plyos on Day #2. Woke up sore as hell this morning. Completed an extremely modified version of Chest and Arms tonight. Looked at the Ab Ripper work outs that I was supposed to do after #1 & #3 and decided to maybe work them in to the routine on week 2 or week 3. Scheduled to do the yoga workout tomorrow. It's gonna scorch my legs I already know.

Topic: RE: Starting P90X Today
When I first started coming on here a couple of years ago there was a mad man that posted here by the name of NotDave. He would post wild tales about his workouts that were simply unbelievable to a morbidly obese man. He was talking mostly about what he was doing with the P90X workouts. I was satisfied to just get my walking in and leave the craziness to NotDave.

But as an ex-college athlete the idea of getting back into great physical condition again kinda intrigued me and so I put it on the back burner. After a year of being stalled out at the 255 - 275 range, I believe I'm mentally ready to finish the journey. I  purchased the P90X program for myself and am gonna start it today. I may be to sore and tired to type tomorrow. If y'all see or hear from NotDave tell him to say a prayer for me. I'm not sure I'm ready for this deep of water, but I'm gonna jump in and swim with the sharks anyway.

I'll try to keep you posted. In the mean time, get your ass out of the warm house and into the cold air and walk.
