Monday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench! ~ JudyAnne

HOW FAST TIME FLIES BY, 3 MONTHS OUT! ~7/9/07
on July 9, 2007 9:32 am

Wow, 3 months down!  I am 161 as of this morning, down 42lbs.  Met with my nutritionist on friday and she said I am about half way there!  I would be thrilled with another 50lbs but I will take whatever I can get.  Down to a size 12 now and feeling so much better.  I am so greatful I was able to have this surgery, I am finally getting back to my old self again!  Eating is going better, I just eat a few bites and I feel full.  This summer is going well!  Good luck to all of you where ever you are on your journey!

BACK TO THE HOSPITAL!!~6/12/07
on June 12, 2007 8:57 am
Yes it's true, I am back in the hospital again.  Here is what happened.  Saturday I felt crampy all day.  I figured it was something I ate that did not agree with me.  We went to The Police concert that night and I was in pain most of the time.  I woke up the next morning with nausea and vomiting.  I thought I had a stomach virus.  I vomited all day until about 5pm when I finally went to the hospital.  (Looking back, when you have a stomach bug you vomit and then feel a little better and are able to rest.  I was in vomiting all day with no rest and the pain was so much that I could not get comfortable in any position).

When I finally got to the hospital (should have called the ambulance) my pain was so severe it was in my chest and into my shoulders.  So they had to rule out a MI, they put in 2 large bore IV's with in minutes of arrival and gave me sublingual Nitroglicern.  That dropped my blood pressure and I vomited more.  They moved me back to the trama room and did abdominal xrays and sent me to cat scan.  They finally found a small bowel obstruction.  Then they finally gave me good pain meds and I did much better from that point on.  They have kept me here for 2 nights, slowly advancing my diet again.

So thank goodness I responded to conservative managment.  I was only in pain for one day and have felt fine since.  What a weekend!  I am soooo thankful I did not need surgery again.  The bariatric coordinator said only about 5% of people have this complication.  Lucky me!  And now I am back to work again tomorrow!  Take care everyone and best wished on your journey!

2 MONTHS DOWN! ~ 6/5/07
on June 5, 2007 9:52 am

Well, time is flying by now!  I am back to work and life just keeps moving.  Not much to report this month.  I am getting better with lactose, as long as I have small amounts.  I am down 30.5 lbs as of today!  That makes my BMI 34.5, so I no longer qualify for this surgery!  I am still working on increasing my fluids, it is so easy for me to get behind and end up dehydrated.  One big change I have noticed is that before surgery I felt hungery all of the time, now I rarely feel hungery and am full within a few bites.  I want feel this way forever, but I know chances are in the next year things will go back to the way they were prior to surgery.    I will post again next month!  Good luck to everyone!

IT'S BEEN A MONTH! ~ 5/10/07
on May 10, 2007 4:12 pm
Well I made it!  It has been a month!  I must say the first few weeks were a bit more than I had expected.  I think once I figured out I had become lactose intollerant things got better.  This whole eating thing is challenging.  One day I can eat something and it goes down fine.  I try it again and my pouch is not happy!  Oh well, it is just going to be trial and error for a few months.  I am walking 3 miles a day, 5-6 x a week again and feel sooo much better.  I am finally able to get about 40oz of h2o down.  I am such a water drinker that this seems like such a small amount.  I am constantly trying to increase the fluids!  Well today I am down to 181.5!  That is a 21.5 lb loss in one month!  I am thrilled with that, it has been 10 years since I was able to lose that much!

Here are my one month measurements:

Pre-op:                                                   1 month Post-op:
arm-18 (inches)                                   arm-16.5
neck-14.5                                               neck-13.25
waist-45                                                 waist-42
hips-48                                                   hips-47
thigh-30                                                  thigh-27.5
knee-18.5                                              knee-18
calf-17.5                                                 calf-16.5
wrist-6.5                                                 wrist-6

And I just had my wedding ring sized down to a 4.5 from a 5.5!  So far no complications and I feel pretty darn good!  Well I am off to our support group now!

HOME AND STARTING TO FEEL HUMAN...
on April 16, 2007 6:49 pm

WOW!  WHAT A WEEK!  Here is the good news, down 10lbs in 7 days!  I know this is water weight, but I will take what I can get!  Here is a quick recap of my last week:

Monday morning sooooooooo nervous, could not stay still in the hospital waiting for surgery!  My surgery was at 10:00am.  Back to pre op at about 9am.  Went smoothly, except my anxiety was killing me.  I am an RN and for surgeries in the past I have hand picked my Anesthesioligists, so hence lots of drugs in pre op to keep me nice and relaxed.  This time, I am not having surgery at the hospital where I work, so I get a doc that works with Dr. Chae.  Which is all good and fine, but he doesn't know me.  Anyhoo, as they were pushing me back to the OR, finally a little Valuim to help me relax.  I remember getting into the OR and then night, night!  Woke up in recovery in plenty of pain, nurse finally got it under control and transfered me up to my room.  Sleeping most of the rest of the day.

Tueday, good day, kept my pain under control but started getting massive headaches from diladid.

Wednesday, doing so well Dr. Chae said I was fine to go home!

Wednesday night throught to Friday morning was very rough.  The pain meds were not quite cutting it and the gas pain was incredible.  I was up out of bed every hour walking and rocking to help move the gas, it was so misserable.  My poor husband, I wouldn't let him leave the room I was so scard.  I have been through 2 other surgeries and have given birth to 2 children, but I have never experianced anything like this.  I almost went back to the ER.

Friday, finally better, able to rest and trying to push fluids.

Saturday, even better!

Sunday, not feeling great again.  I think the milk is giving me stomach cramps on top of feeling sore.

Monday, better day again.  I know now milk is not sitting well.

So that's my first week out!  I feel stronger every day!  I will be so sad if I can't ever have dairy again, since I love cheese, but oh well.  I see Dr. Chae on Thursday and will update then!

My Story

I have been over weight for my entire life.  My first realization that I was different was in third grade when my mom put me on Weight Watchers and sent me with a frozen dinner to school everyday for the lunch ladys to heat up for me.  It has been a battle from that day forward.  I have been on every diet you can imagine and have exercised on and off since I was 22.  I have done the 60 mile Avon walk and trained for 6 months with only 2-3 pounds lost.  I have done a  Danskin sprint distance triathalon, trained for almost a year and lost only 2-3 pounds.  I diet almost every day of my life.  I will lose 10lbs and then gain 15 back.  And now I am as heavy as when I was 9 months pregnant with my son.  40 BMI and boarder line for qualifing.  This year I was diagnosed with MS and my activity level has greatly decreased due to my numbness, tingling and weakness in my extremities.  I started investigating WLS last year because I need a tool to help me get control.  Now I know this is what I need to do to stay mobile and active with MS.  I have started the 6 month nutrition/exercise and phsy. eval required by my insurance prior to submitting paper work.  I am hoping I am doing everything correctly.  I will submit in March of 2007.
