Surgeon TestimonialMark A. Colquitt, MD, FACSI have met with Dr. Colquitt and found him very pleasant. He was also very professional and made both my husband and myself feel comfortable about everything. The staff is great and respond quickly to any email or phone calls I make to them. This group in very into preop and after care. They are affiliated with the psychologist, dietician and other members who will be helping me through this whole procedure, so you don't have to searching for a professional that you will need.rnrnAlthough I have met the surgeon, I am awaiting my charts for the last 5 years, then will see the nutritionist and they will send my paperwork for approval.rnrnThis group has a very high success rate and he alone has done over 350 bariatric surgeries.

Hi,
Postop on January 19, 2009 2:26 pm
Well here I am almost two weeks out. I started out great for the first 24 hours, was even told by one of the nurses I was doing better than anyone she had seen and she was a bariatric nurse. That must have jinxed me because the next afternoon I began intractable vomiting and diarrhea. With medication and IV fluids I was able to go home in 4 days. Feelt good Saturday and Sunday, then Sunday night I began the vomiting again. Went back to the doctor Monday and he admitted me. Four days later, after multiple meds and two units of blood (!?!) I went home for good.
This has been a real learning experience for me. It's like having to learn how to eat all over. The first couple of times I had something more substantial than a liquid I was extremely nervous. I sure don't want to go through all that vomiting again!! I have found that it is very hard, at least for me, to eat sloooowly. I find I just have to be conscious of what I am doing at all times. I'm sure it will become easier the farther I get.
Yesterday I was having some deviled egg and forgot and took a large gulp of my tea (I will not have my drink on the table from now on). I'm not sure if that is what caused it but about 20-30 minutes later I became sweaty, nauseous, weak, and had to run to the bathroom. Thank goodness, no vomiting but much dia*****. I felt bad for about another hour, then was ok. I guess I have been initiated to "dumping". This must be the negative reinforcement I was needing to lose weight lol.
I feel like I am really on this journey. I will be glad when I am not so weak and can "get physical". I am hoping to start my walking back this week. Must remember, baby steps, baby steps.

Well, it's official! January 6, 2009. I'm still calm but sure I will get more anxious the closer it gets. I realize it is a lifechanging procedure and I am trying to get ready. Stopped drinking carbonated sodas last month and now only drink decaffinated coffee. I am reading everything I can and rereading the books I read at the beginning. I have to admit I feel very lucky getting through all of this so quickly. I went to my first seminar on August 27th and it has been pretty easy since then, especially after listening to some people's horror stories.
I will probably update just before the surgery. Right now I'm just trying to get through the holiday season.

Papers to insurance!! on November 20, 2008 12:00 am
Well, everything is on it's way to my insurance company. I have heard Tricare Prime can take from a few days to a month. I will be online checking every day and then on the phone bugging them. I would really like to get the surgery done before the end of the year, maybe even New Years Eve. Then I could really start out the new year as MY new year and life.
I never would have thought I would be looking forward to surgery!
I am so glad I found this web site. What a wonderful group of people. I have only met a few so far but hope to meet more at the Christmas party. Everyone is so supportive and able to answer your questions or at least tell you where to find them.
Another reason I am hoping to get the surgery soon is that my blood sugar seems to be slowly climbing. So far I am diet controlled and don't want to have to go on medication.
Oh well, we'll see. One of my favorite sayings is "He only gives you what He thinks you can handle"

Stilllll waiting! on November 10, 2008 6:40 pm
Well, thought I would know something by now but another glitch. The nurse from my surgeon's office called and they had forgot to order an "h pylori" blood test (looking for ulcers). The reason they forgot was because my insurance does not require it, but they do. So I went to have the blood test the same day and the tech tells me it takes 7 to 10 days. I called the doctor's office in 9 days, she had the test and said it was positive. Scared me. I don't have any symptoms of ulcers but they can be silent! I did some research on this and about half of all Americans are positive. It is apparently a bacteria that we carry which can cause irritation, leading to ulcers. They did start me on propholactic antibiotics ( 4 twice a day) and they had to schedule a barrium swallow, which I had done this morning. The radiologist was not supposed to tell me anything but she said I am clear. No ulcers!!! They are going to send the report to my surgeon in the next day or two so hopefully my papers will go to the insurance company this week!

Waiting! on October 21, 2008 6:51 pm
Well, now I have received the call from my surgeon's office telling me they have all the paperwork and will be sending it to the insurance company in the next day or two. I still have not seen the nut but I think that comes after the approval. I have been one of the lucky ones in that tricare insurance does not require proof of attempts at weight loss. Guess they figure if we weigh this much and are willing to go through surgery and the drastic changes to our life that we have probably tried every other avenue. I think my husband is more nervous than me about the whole thing. We have been married for a long time but I have faith it will all go ok and I can get back to doing things without always being short of breath and essentially avoiding groups. I'm sure many of the people here have felt the same and want to feel "normal" again. We'll see how soon I hear from them.

My Story
My name is Nancy and I guess I am a semiretired RN.
I have three grown children, severn grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter. Oh yes, the most wonderful and patient husband of almost 39 years
I worked as a critical care, ER , then cardiac cath lab nurse over the last 24 years. I worked until 2005 when we were getting our home in Naples, FL ready to sell. My husband was retiring. I fell and broke my leg and ankle pulling vines out of trees. After surgery and nearly a year of recovery, I had to have a total knee replacement of the right knee. That is good most of the time now but I have since developed osteoarthritis, hypertension, elevated cholesterol and then this week was told by my MD that I am a diabetic!!
We now live in Sevierville, TN and love it. We have traveled a lot as my husband was an Army officer. He retired, then worked in Florida, and retired from there. We sold our home in Florida, bought a cabin and found a wonderful church to join here.
I have met with the surgeon, had the two meetings with the psychologist, bloodwork, and ultrasound done. I am now waiting for the surgeon to receive the last 5 years of my medical records and send the paperwork to Tricare for their approval then I can really begin this journey..
