Day 8 Of Pre-Op Diet And The Dreaded "E" Word.

Oct 07, 2013

Well day eight of my pre-op diet started much like any other.  I got up drank 4 oz of my protein drink and decided today was a great day to clean the house.  Its excercise right?  Our surgeon has made it very clear that we need to exercise at 30 minutes a day.  Me and exercise really  have never been close friends.  I have had periods of my life where we have been better acquainted, and then others where we are the purest of enemies.  Recently, we have been just that...enemies.

I have tried over the past eight days to do what was requested of us.  Some days I thought about it but never made it out the door.  Finally the other day I went out and actually walked with a friend 1.8 miles.  That may not seem like a lot, but for me it was a marathon, but I felt great afterwards.  I may have been "glistening" a little from the sweat, but all was well.

Back to today, I decided to clean the house today.  I was well aware that my energy levels were not up to what they have been in the past, so I took my two girls offer to help.  One chose the showers and the other the vacuuming.  All I needed to do was scrub the toilets, clean the counters, and mop the floors.  The dusting could wait for another day.  I have never had a hard time with the house, why would today be different?

Well, after just one trip up the stairs and just starting the cleaning of the counter and mirror of one bathroom, the sweat starting pouring out.  No "glistening" for this girl.  By the time I finished the housework I knew that I was in trouble.  I sat in my sons room barely able to just breathe.  By this time I looked as if I just had a shower, I was shaky, and just needed to sit.  My daughter came in to see why I chose his room to park my fanny, and she realized that it was time for another 4 oz of protein shake, by the way I looked.  It took a few moments, but that made me feel like the staircase  wasn't a million stairs down.  It was a doable task.  I went down to grab a shower, which is normally a very pleasant thing for me.  Not today, it too was a chore.  One of which I wasn't sure I would be able to complete.  By the time I made it out I was screaming for yet another 4 oz shake.

I write all this to say lessoned learned.  I guess while I am on this part of my diet, I need to make sure that I hydrate well, and drink a couple of protein shakes before tackling any type of ongoing exercise.  Or I could accept more help from my kids, and delegate a few more tasks out. Another thing I could choose to do is tackle one or two rooms a day, not the entire house.  It goes to show that many things as I walked this new journey need to change, and its not only my relationship with food.
