Finally Getting There

Jan 01, 2010

Wow! It took a year almost exactly for this to happen. I started in November of 2008. My husband works for the Harrah's companies in Las Vegas. They had their own medical clinic and state of the art gym. Along with all this they ran a Bariatric program. Well at first I was put off by all you had to do in this program to get the surgery. Now a year and a lap band later I can say that program was my own special angel. We had a group meeting once a month and those people became my family. You share so much of your life with them talking about some really personal feelings. Had to meet with a psychotherapist once a month and with a nutritionist once a month. Those two people were the people that ran the entire program. We were made to go to the gym a couple of times a week and meet with their trainers. (oh did I mention this was all free,so not a bad deal). So my husband is a slot tech and they ended up going union which changed to us a new medical insurance. The clinic and everything was for those on the insurance the rest of Harrah's is on. They agreed though that since I was about done with our requirements to let me stay and they would send my file to the surgeon and my new insurance company. They also announced on our last day of class that Harrah's was getting rid of the bariatric program. We were the last class to go through it in Vegas. So GLAD we made it. I learned more about me in the last year than you can imagine. Well when the classes ended and the other people started making their surgery dates for April and May of 2009 I found out that for my insurance I needed more tests. Then my primary didn't want to sign off for me as a diabetic and she sent me to and endocronologist who immediately signed off for me. By the time I was ready it was July. I work for a baseball team and our season ended the first week of September so I scheduled surgery for Sept 8, 2009. They opened me up to find my liver was enlarged so they backed out and said to lose around 30 pounds and we would try again. By the first week of November I was ready to go again. They warned me that although the weightloss does shrink the liver that it still might not be enough because it had only been 2 months. Then they did it on Nov 19th. They said that not only did I shrink it enough to operate but, that it was about normal size and they said that was something they never expected. Of course though my surgeon said that because I did all that so well he expects GREAT things from me. UH OH! The Pressure! So now it has been about 6 weeks since my surgery. I had one fill and I need another. I will write my other entries about what I am going through though. I just wanted to write the hassle and struggle of the last year. I have to also say that I would do it 100 times over even with all the road blocks and struggles. It has helped me grow so much. I finally have healed from the pain of losing my mom 4 years ago too through all this. Oh and my relationship with my husband is amazing and never better. He is my strength when I lose mine. He loves me for me and doesn't care what I look like but, because I am diabetic and we watched what that did to my mom he supported me with this so that I can be healthy and hopefully live a long life with him. So now I am nearly 40 and ready to take on the rest of my life.
