Surgeon Testimonial

Sivamainthan (Siva) Vithiananthan, M.D.
April 15, 2008

I had my initial consultation with Dr. Vithiananthan today and was very impressed with him. He was very professional, friendly, and understanding. He outlined the different options available to me and spend over 2 hours going over things with me. I did not feel rushed or unimportant at any time. I'm glad I chose him for my surgery and that he is on the Network Providers list for my insurance. :)

16 days postop and just wanted to add that Dr. V is the BEST. He's now my miracle man ... I came through the surgery with flying colors, and having already been taken off two of my prior meds, I feel like a new women. His his entire team was so very supportive. I need to especially mention Amy, the Nurse Practitioner who works along side of Dr. V. She is the best. So very knowledgable and caring. I feel so fortunate to be in their hands. Amy goes above and beyond the duty of being a caring and understanding health care provider.

Learning every day...

I am SOoooo learning to use my RNY tool every day.  After several cases of the foamies with vomiting, I think I'm finally learning how to 'eat correctly'.  My weight has been coming off nice and steadily and I am feeling fantastic!!!  My clothes sizes are going down faster than I can keep up with them.... thank God I never got rid of most of my smaller sizes.  I have gone down 1 bra size, 2 blouse sizes, 2 pant sizes, 2 dress sizes, 1/2 shoe size, and 1 ring size.  I love this progression of my weight loss and feeling so much better...  it's like a miracle.

Darlene - lovin my RNY.

The foamies from eating too fast... no fun at all

Oh man have I learned some hard lessons over the past few days.  My NUT just recently put me on a regular diet.... so I've been trying a few meats since she says I'm not getting even half of the protein that I need.

I tried some grilled chicken the other evening and about 20 minutes after eating... I felt like I was having a heart attack.  This is by far the worse pain I've ever experienced.  I was so so very sick.  I felt this burning sensation rising up and down my esophagus like an elevator, combined with excruciating chest pains and back pains.  Finally after half an hour of my husband rubbing my back to try and help... I was able to vomit  and ever so slowly felt better.  The entire experience lasted about an hour.  What pain and discomfort to deal with for only a small piece of chicken (IT WAS LESS THAN AN OUNCE).

So the next morning thinking that all was okay now.... I took a small sip of water (like I always do upon awakening) along with my morning meds.  20 minutes later ... the entire experience I had the prior evening started recurring.  Only this time, it was with dry heaves!!!

My husband was more frightened than I was and called my doctor.  I talked with him and shared the experience and he seems to think the chicken "expanded my pouch" causing some swelling... which had not healed as of the morning.  He told me to try some warm fluids, like tea, and if I still couldn't keep fluids down, then to come to the office, because I would need to be hydrated.

Well, the tea did work and I am feeling so much better today.  But I will say that I am now afraid to try meats.  I have no problems with fruits, veggies, soggy cereals, and protein shakes.  To hell with the whole meats... I don't need or want them if I have to go through that experience again!!!!

Finding solutions

Well I'm learning to find solutions to my weight stalls.  I uped my protein and increased my exercise over the past couple days and "poof", 2 more pounds melted away.  Again - I love my RNY I just need to remind myself sometimes that my RNY is a tool, it needs me to make it work!

16 days postop

Things are moving along smoothly, although the rapid weight loss I had in the first week and a half seems to have come to a halt!  I know this is normal and refuse to worry.  Hey, I'm under 200 pounds!!!!!  I have nothing to complain about.

I'm still on the pureed diet until I meet with my NUT on Monday and she transitions me over to "normal foods".  Can't wait...  I'm getting bored of the same old things.... although I have learned how to puree tuna and it is a delicacy that I look forward to

I hardly have any pain left... a few twinges once in awhile.  I'm just amazed at how easy this entire process was.  One day at a time, every day I feel a little better.

Two wow moments this week - I have a neck again.  I am able to take off my wedding rings without lotions.  They slide right on and off  "life is good"

10 days postop

Weight:  199

Hard to believe how fast everything is going.  I am 10 days postop today.    I must say this surgery was a lot easier than I had expected.  Other than the few aches, pains, and inconveniences of being in a hospital for 3 days, I'm doing very well.

I'm still on the pureed diet stage, will be until week 4.  Needless to say, my stools are very runny and dark greenish (could be from the iron), but hey, I've lost my first 15 pounds and I am shocked at how fast this came off.... with no hunger!!!  I'm finding lots to eat in this stage, as well as (which I'm most surprised about) I do not feel deprived of sweets at all.  I am amazed at how many "sugar-free" foods this world offers and I'm in a RNY sugar-free heaven!  I had no problem giving up coffee, which I thought would've been my downfall.  The thing I miss the most and "mind crave" every so often is a tall glass of diet pepsi filled with ice cubes, especially at this warm time of year.  But, I am managing fine.

No regrets... I love my RNY
