Day 11 - Complications

Sep 15, 2013

We are at Day 11 -- Weighing in @ 264.  Whoop.  So, Thursday I went to the support group and it was great.  The docs were there along with people who haven't had surgery to those 13 yrs post op.  My favorite Bariatric Nurse, Deb was there and 2 Nutritionists who did a lot of teaching things not to do.  I found all this helpful.  I got to normalize aches and pains, get some support, and make new friends all at once.  A few people who had not had surgery spoke to me about my experiences.  I hope I was helpful to them.  A lot of people shared their experience with me so I was glad to give back.

I got home from the hospital and my energy was shot.  I came home, hit the bed, and slept.  I started having this spasm in my upper left quad in my tummy right behind my rib cage.  I just figured it was some gas pains and it would go away and off to bed I went.

Friday, I woke up and the pain was still there and I found it worse when I drank.  Again, it's just a very tight, acute, pain that lasts literally a few seconds.  It's just they hit every minute or so when I'm drinking or a few times an hour when I'm not drinking.

I called the doc and they scheduled me an endoscopy.  He said he didn't think it was anything and they couldn't do anything about the pain.  He thought it was normal part of healing, but would schedule an endoscopy just to ensure nothing was wrong.

So, Friday night, we went to our town square where a live band was playing.  It was nice night to just get some fresh air, so we packed up the dog and my fluids and off to the square we went.  It's like any town square where you can walk around & we did a little bit of walking.  As the night progressed, I began getting chilled and began feeling a little achy like I was beginning to run a temp.  My boyfriend grew concerned that I was so chilled when he thought it was very comfortable.  We had brought a light blanket so I just wrapped up in the blanket.

The band grew to a close and we did one final lap around the square and home we went.  I checked my temp and sure enough it was 99.2.  Nothing to worry about my boyfriend said.  Not even considered a temp.  I was exhausted and crawled in the bed and crashed.

Saturday I woke up & felt great. We decided to go estate sale shopping just to get out of the house & get me walking.  I was on the hunt for a new washer & dryer.  So, off we went w/ my fluids packed up.  Got in some walking and did a goodwill donation.  Found a used washer & dryer for $400, but we couldn't negotiate an agreeable return if it did not work upon hook up.  $400 is too much to just throw away & they couldn't get it to work in the store.  So we left that set.

I was starting to feel bad again so we ended up heading home.  I got home and said screw it and took a 1/4 dose of pain meds just to take the edge off the pain.  Took my temp and it was climbing again.  By 7pm it had reached 100.0, so I called the doc.

He listened to my symptoms and said he didn't hear anything that couldn't wait until the 7am endoscopy on Monday.  He started me on Prilosec & said to double the dose for the first few days.  He told me to call him if my temp reached 101 or 102.  I wasn't having any nausea or vomiting and my temp was not indicating something major.  I didn't want to wait in the ER half the night it I didn't need to.

So, I research my symptoms and the only thing that I can come up w/ is an inflamed pancreasis.  Based on the complications common w/ Bariatric Sleeve & where my pain is and the duration and type of pain.  However, pancreatitisis involves high fever, nausea, & vomitting which I don't have.  It does say that sometimes after surgery the gastric juices get confused b/c they don't have food to chew on & accidently attack the pancreatis.  This could explain my pain as the type of pain is very similar to what I have.  But, I'm curious as to why my doc didn't mention it.  Maybe it's just something that he plans to check out on Monday.  Who knows.  I just want to know what is wrong.

So, I'm just trying to hold out until tomorrow @ 7am to see what's going on with my tummy.  WebMD says to diagnose pancreatitis an endoscopy can be used -- so at least we'll find out tomorrow.

Anyway, I'm one of those that once I know what is wrong -- I am much better.  This unknowing & guessing part drives me insane.  I'll find out soon enough.
