Good thing you've gone below 350 lbs

Oct 01, 2011

On one of my visits to my PCP to discuss WLS, she told me that she was glad that I was able to get below 350 lbs. because the surgeons wouldn't allow surgery until after I had dropped enough weight to be below 350 lbs.  The reason she says is that the surgical tables are only rated for 350 lbs.  I assume she knows what she's doing.  I have had sleep assessment and I, of course, have sleep apnea.  I've already been to the psychologist.  I looked into WLS back around 2002 when I lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  I went to one of the weekly information seminars and really wanted to be able to tackle my weight back then; however, my insurance company would not cover the surgery.

I was able to lose 100lbs on my own but have since put it all back on.  My highest weight ever was about 6 months ago when I weighed in at 363lbs.  I was have all kind of knee problems.  I had so much pain I couldn't walk, get up from my chair, it was awful.  I put myself back on a low calorie (1000-1200 calories) per day.  I also combined it with little or no carbohydrates.  I am now at 330lbs.  I try to weigh myself once a week, no more.  I hate the let down of not having lost any weight or putting on one or two pounds.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis for which I take a great deal of medication including Humira, methotrexate, prednisone and plaquenil.  I take a plethora of other medication.  I won't bore you with them.

About WLS.  The only person that knows that I am looking into WLS is my boyfriend.  I have not told my children, all of whom live far away from me.  My eldest daughter just had a baby boy and she has been begging me to visit.  Of course I want to visit but I want to have the surgery before I leave.  I have promised her that I will visit her in Seattle in spring when the weather is better and we can get around to do things.  The truth of the matter is that I hate sitting in the airplane seat.  I am so hoping and praying that I'll have the surgery before the end of the year.

I have been reading blogs for most of this week and I can really see how helpful the OH website is.  I have already made a couple of friends.  Keep the faith.
