Surgery was on 12/16/14 and progress so far

Dec 19, 2014

Hello VSG and WLS community. First post in awhile. I had my VSG on 12/16/14 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton OH with surgeon Dr. Donovan Teel. Starting weight was 343.9 on 11/24/14. After a 2 week Pre-op Diet I was at 330.3

Day of surgery was good, Woke up at 9am surgery set for 1230pm. Got to the surgery center about 1030am. Checked in and nervously awaited to be called back. About 11:00am was finally called back and they rushed to get me ready. I guess the surgeon was 1 hour ahead of schedule. I was quickly prepped with gown and IV. Totally stripped even my wedding band had to come off. My wife was brought back to me just in time for me to see the anesthesiologist Dr. Jeff Hamilton. Who was completely awesome and really put me at ease. I got wheeled back and drifted off to a nice sleep. Next thing i knew i was being wheeled to my room 6669. I remember the recovery room a little just being very nauseous and in pain but they controlled that. I was told later that i was in recovery for over 4 hours. But i don't remember. I do remember the transport guy that pushed me up to my room saying his name was Indiana Jones, which i wonder if he was just messing with me. About 5:30pm i had my family into visit. My wife, mom and In-laws all there to give me support. Later that evening about 8:00pm my pastor arrived to give me a prayer of support. My pain was managed pretty well with IV pain meds and some sure other things i don't recall. At about 930pm i decided it was time for me to start walking. Not the best idea from what I was told. I can remember walking down the hall then getting wheeled back to my room. It was later told to me that i collapsed into my wife's arms and was held up by several nurses before getting wheels back to my room. Later that night was absolutely HELL. The nurse had me up about every hour to try to pee. At one point they did a bladder scan to make sure there was urine in there. I've never been so nervous to pee. She even threatened me many times with a catheter. Which was not going to happen! She finally gave be a 1000cc bag of fluid bolus and I was able to meet her requirement by morning. Was really kind of crappy cause all your body wants to do is sleep and rest and I had Nurse Ratchet hovering over me all night.

Day 1 Post-op

Woke up about 430am and was awake enough to do a YouTube video update. I'm under VSG Steve, I will post a link. After that I slept a bit more till about 8am. When I finally got the strength to attempt another walk. Which I succeeded with flying colors! I walked up and down the hallways a total of 7 times that morning. Which i think really impressed the staff. I was moved to a full fluids diet which consisted of a popsicle and sugar free jello. I choked down about half of that jello. I was then moved to some protein at lunch time. In which they made a protein chicken flavored thing. I instantly became ill and they quickly gave me some Zofran. Met with the surgeon about 2:30pm who cleared me to go home. Ok i know my wife did her best, but the road home was very bumpy and the worst pain I've felt to so far. I would say at least a 9 of 10. I finally made it home to my favorite chair and fell fast asleep. I managed to wake up about 8pm to get some water in me and just a little protein before. Sleeping the rest of the night. I was however up many times with trips to the bathroom.
