Surgeon Testimonial

Van Wagner, M.D.
Dr. Wagner is very knowledgable. He presents his own seminar (this is not always the case with other surgeons. I have attended 2 other seminars - one the surgeon presented his seminar and the other seminar was presented by the program director) and answered everyone's questions. He was very careful to explain what to expect with each type of surgery and both the benefits and risks of each surgery. I was very impressed from the beginning with Dr. Wagner and knew after attending his seminar that I was making the right decision in picking him for my bariatric surgeon.
His office staff is great. He has a patient advocate, Brittani, who is very knowledgable in handling insurance claims and works diligently to get you approved (my insurance was very stinky and required a lot of time and effort from both Brittani and myself to gain approval) Dr. Wagner also has his own dietatian, Staci, who meets with you each time you go for an appointment. Staci is very knowledgable also and makes sure all your questions are answered regarding diet and vitamin requirements for your particular procedure.
Dr. Wagner requires post-op visits at regular intervals for all bariatric patients (schedule varies depending upon which procedure you choose) and of course anytime there may be an issue. At each of these visits, you see Dr. Wagner and Staci to make sure everything is going according to plan and that you are on track with your weight loss.
I would recommend Dr. Wagner to anyone thinking about having WLS.

One year post-op
on November 9, 2012 7:16 am

Today is my one year anniversary for my VSG. I must say that my life has changed so much since a year ago. I am down a total of 138 pounds and currently weigh 187 pounds. I am no longer on cholesterol meds, migraine meds or arthritis meds and no longer need SynVisc shots in my knees.

I am able to walk great distances, hike, bike, kickbox, do Zumba, play with my daughter, push mow and weedeat my lawn, and even run. Just a year ago just walking left my knees and hips hurting and me out of breath.

I have also gone from a size 26/28 shirt and 24 pants to a XL shirt and size 12 pants. I have collar bones, a neck, hip bones and muscular legs, but along with all the benefits of weight loss comes a few negatives like the excess skin. I have batwings, saggy breasts, thighs and butt, my belly looks like a deflated balloon and my butt is all but no existent. But I will take the saggy/excess skin any day over carrying around the excess weight.

Anyway just wanted to fill everyone in on my first year post-op.

Sherri

10 Months Post-Op
on September 10, 2012 10:48 am
I was 10 months post-op yesterday. A lot has happened in the past month. First and foremost, I am now in the middle of a divorce. I actually found out late in the day on August 9th (my 9 month post-op anniversary) that my husband of 11 1/2 years was cheating and said he wanted a divorce. He moved right out of our home and in with his girlfriend leaving me feeling like someone had ripped my heart out and stomped on it. Apparently he had been lying and sneaking around with her for sometime. And lying to me because I was under the impression that everything was along fine. We had just been on vacation and had what I thought was a great time. He seemed happy to have the time away as a family. And probably TOM but our sex life was going great. It was better then it had been in awhile. All I know is this jumped up and slapped me in the face when I found out he was cheating.
Ok, moving onward. As of this morning my weight is down a total of 124 pounds. I am one pound away from the 200 mark. Only 2 pounds to get to 199 and officially be in Onderland. I can't hardly wait. It has been several years since I was under 200 pounds.
I had a great NSV this weekend. I was able to fit into my smallest size pants that I have from previous weight loss. They are size 14 khakis and the last time they fit, I weighed 180 pounds. So I am still 20 pounds heavier but apparently have more muscle because they fit. For shirts, I guess the smallest I ever got last time was a 1X womens because I didn't have anymore shirts left to try on. Oh well, I guess I will have to do a little shopping for some shirts. WOOHOO!!! Finally get to do some shopping because I am running out of clothes. They are all too big! I never thought I would see this day.
I am still doing my kickboxing and loving it. It is such a great workout and with everything that is going on right now in my life, it is a great way to take my stress out on something! LOL
Anyway, I'll keep everyone updated on my progress.
TTYL,
Sherri

9 Months Post-Op
on August 9, 2012 6:32 am
Today is my 9 month anniversary of having my VSG. Today my weight was 219.6 which makes me down a total of 105.6 pounds. WOOHOO!!! That was 8.4 pounds lost this past month. So I am still steadily losing an average of 2 pounds a week.
Sometimes I wish I were a fast loser, but the reality of it is that I am a slow and steady loser. That is fine as long as the scale keeps moving in the right direction.
I am still taking my kickboxing classes twice a week and loving it. They are really kick butt! We not only work our arms and legs to fatique with punching and kicking but we also get a great core workout with all the Chinese sit ups and push ups. I can tell that my arms, abs and thighs are getting tighter.
I have so much loose skin on my body that I am really thinking I will have to have some surgeries at some point in time. It's my upper arms, sides where my bra sits, back, hips, buttocks, belly (upper and lower) and inner thighs (pretty much to my knees). YUCK!
I have started wearing compression workout clothes to hold in the excess skin so it doesn't flop and pull when exercising. It's really hard to focus on keeping your abs tight and hips tucked under when doing the different punches and such when every move makes your belly flop and bounce all over the place!
I am getting lots of compliments for everyone about how great I look. This is hard for me sometimes as I am not use to all this attention.
Currently I am still in mostly 16W pants and 14W/16W shirts, but I am fitting into some 16/18 (misses XL) clothes as well.
Oh, I had a great NSV this past week in that I was able to push mow our yard. Our yard is huge and my husband normally mows it with a riding mower, but I push mowed the entire yard. I worked for over 2 hours on Monday and an additional hour on Wednesday to get it all mowed but it felt great to be able to do hard work like that again (and to be able to do it in the heat of the summer!). I haven't push mowed or trimmed with a weed-eater since before I was pregnant with my daughter and she almost 9.
Oh, our trip to Holiday World was awesome. I rode all the roller coasters with my husband and daughter. I fit easily with room to spare. WOOHOO! We were at the parks (amusement park and water park) for 2 whole days and I was easily able to do all the walking up and down the hills, stairs, etc. and able to keep up with my family. No huffing and puffing and stopping to rest this time. What a great feeling! I actually felt normal for the first time in several years.
Well that's about all I got for now.
TTYL,
Sherri

8 Months Post-Op
on July 9, 2012 6:24 am
Ok today I am 8 months post-op. I weigh 228 pounds. That is 97 pounds lost. I was really hoping to be over 100 at this point, but it is what it is. I have lost 8 pounds since my 7 month post. The weight seems really slow to come off, but it is still coming off and that is the most important part.
I am wearing size 16W pants and 14/16W shirts mostly now. I have a lot of loose and floppy skin on my stomach, arms, and thighs and my butt is very jiggly now.
I have started taking a kick boxing class twice a week now. I love it. It is really hard and I know there is no way I could have done it at 325 pounds. I still do Zumba, but only manage to get there maybe once a week. I am hoping to bump that back up to at least twice a week also now that DD is done with softball.
We are going to Holiday World next week and I am looking forward to riding the roller coasters again. Last time I was there, I didn't fit and was humiliated when I had to exit the coaster in front of my husband and daughter.
It has been over 100 for almost 2 weeks now, but I haven't had any heat induced headaches/migraines. That is fantastic since I use to get them anytime I spent any amount of time outside if the temp was over 90.
I am feeling good and have more energy than I have had in years. I don't regret my decision to have weight loss surgery for even a moment. The only thing I would change is that I would have gotten it sooner.
I deal with a few new problems such as skin rashes from the excess skin and having to take Vitamin D and Potassium now, but that is so much better than carrying around all the excess weight.
Until later,
Sherri

My Story

Hi, I'm Sherri. I am 37 years old. I have a wonderful husband and a 7 year old daughter. I have battled with my weight my entire life. My doctor put me on a diet when I was 9 and labeled me as "obese." Since then, I have been on every diet known to man. I lose some weight, but then the weight is back quicker than I lost it with a few more pounds, too. I have started having medical issues and my weight is having a huge impact on the quality of my life. I am not able to play with my daughter like I want to be able to because I am so big and my body just hurts.
Recently we visited a theme park and I was about sick that I couldn't fit into the seat of the roller coaster. The seat belt just wouldn't fit me. What made it worse was that it was my daughter's first ride on a real roller coaster. She and my husband had to go without me. I put my head down in shame as I exited the roller coaster and made my way to the viewing area. It was all I could do not to breakdown and cry. My husband didn't say much and tried to console me by saying the seats were small, but I know that is how all the coasters are. My daughter only said, "Mommy couldn't ride because she was too big." That's not the memories I want my daughter to have of me.
I have been thinking about and researching WLS for about 4 years now and I have been ready for this for a long time now. I'm ready to get my life back.
