My Journey from the Beginning

Sep 14, 2014

To start this off, just a little back ground. First of all, I am Canadian, living in Switzerland for the past 14 years. You will find that things are done very different here than in the US or Canada.

Five years ago, two friends of mine had WLS. They are doing great! One lent me some books that ultimately got put on a shelf. Although on the shelf, they were not out of mind. I just wasn't ready. In November 2013, I broke my toe...OUCH! I did the "Spock, live long and prosper" with my second and middle toe with the ladder of my 7 year old son's bed. Not once but TWICE. oh, did I say OUCH? So off to the doctor I go. While I was there I decided to ask him about my weight. He agreed my BMI was high and he would get an appointment with the Endocrinologist. Two days later I got my appointment for the 14 January 2014. I took those books off the shelf and started reading. Met with my friend E, who was a great help in answering questions and very supportive, thanks E, hugs!

The hospital sent me a survey to complete. All in German by the way and my German sucks! However, it wasn’t as bad as it looked, mostly family history, prior surgeries, eating habits etc. fairly basic.

I had two appointments this day. Lab work and the Nutritionist. The lab work involved full body scan to determine percent fat/muscle, blood work, tested my rate of metabolism, EKG, blood pressure and the obligatory pee in a bottle. The second appointment was with the Nutritionist. She went over the survey, my diet and family history.

I had two appointments today. The first was with the head of Endocrinology. Dr P gave me the results of my lab tests. He told me I had a very high muscle percentage which was good news. He went over the different types of surgeries in detail. He also told me that the Nutritionist had approved me for the surgery if I choose to go that route. He also had to approve along with the Psychologist which brings me to the next appointment. I had about a 20 minute session with the Dr. S. Funny guy. We just talked about the reason I wanted to loose weight and if I had any previous psychological problems in the past. Bam! Done!

25 March 2014

Fell and broke my arm…ended up in the hospital for 4 days. Broke radius head in 4 pieces and had two pins put in…just what I needed, setting off all the airport security.

28 April 2014

Met with the surgeon, he briefly went over the surgery again said I was approved by everyone (That is why I was there) I had a choice to either get the Vertical Sleeve or the RNY. He told me in my situation he would recommend the RNY. I told him, let’s do it and his assistant had a surgery date for the 27 August before I left the office…YEAH! They wanted to do the surgery in June but I had booked my summer holidays to Canada for July. He didn’t want me going away so close to the surgery.

10 June 2014

I met with my Nutritionist. She went over the post op diet and vitamin requirements.

24 June 2014

Had a stomach x-ray to make sure all the plumbing was working okay. The contrast they make you swallow was very chalky but yet had a vanilla flavour. Can’t do much with that stuff. I then had an ultrasound on my gallbladder. Yup, had some stones and they scheduled and MRI and suggested that they would probably remove it at the same time.

1 July 2014

Had a Gastroscopy, I was worried about this but it went okay. I was pretty much asleep throughout the procedure. Easy Peasy

7 July 2014

Had the MRI. I never thought it would bother me, but it did a wee bit. I had to calm myself down and tell myself that it was only 20 minutes and to breathe and enjoy the music. It worked. Normally they place your arms above your head but because of my broken arm I was unable to do this.

8 July – 11 August

HOLIDAYS - ate all my favourite foods, pigged out. Funny enough I didn’t gain anything.

26 August 2014

Checked into hospital, surgery scheduled for 8:30 am.
