Surgeon Testimonial

George Kazantsev, M.D.
Great surgeon, very little bedside manner. You do not need a freind, you need a surgeon. Staff was (is) wonderful, and supportive.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I avoided talikng about it. I would go on as I was not overweight and consider myself just larger with a high amount of energy and "normal" which was not true.

this has been a successful journey...you are welcome to see what happens when you start to control your life.  The idea that life begins again, after surgery, is remarkable.  Your life changes physically and mentally, for me, both for the better.

Year 4 Surgeversary
on June 9, 2009 3:05 pm

Made it to 4 years......   The best thing is that I am still very healthy, work out 3 - 6 times a week with Jazzercise.  Play golf and srill doing OK, index is 8.  However, I have to be repeatedly reminded not to drink.  A little goes a long way!  Be careful!

Three months until the Anniversary
on March 31, 2008 11:42 am
Still playing golf regularly and walking all the time.  This week I am a marshall in a Nationwide Tour Golf Tournament - the Livermore Valley Wine Open at Wente Vineyards.

I picked out my volunteer uniform and I am still amazed how it is to be treated normally by those assisting me, no you should probalbly get a large than a medium, not because I am too big but because the shirt is all cotton!

I still look in shop windows to be sure it is me there.. not an imposter or that I woke up from a dream.

My daughter routinely actually knocks me out of the way to get by me.

I have seen increase of 5-6 lbs in a year and I am working in getting back down, walking morem eating less.  That age thing!

My second anniversary!!!
on June 8, 2007 11:50 am
Today is my surgery anniversary, too!

In the last two years I went from 360 lbs to 200, and yes they say I am still obese, however I feel great. Physically I do not have sleep apnia, no hypertension (current 120/70), no diabetes, and only minor arthrius in a knee, so what.

My son graduates from UCLA next weekend, I just flew to LA to see him perfom dance with his school (having a full foot of seat belt left over). I am leaving on June 22 for Spain and Italy. I play three rounds of golf a week, walking, my index is 7.7.

I now wear 36 inch pants as opposed to 56 inch pants and just yesterday bought a 44 regular sports coat off the rack (and I had choices), my previous sports coat was a 60! I also bought a new swim suit for the trip.

Yes, my life is changed too! I will see my daughter get married, and now I do not have to pressure her to hurry cause I won't be there. ... by the way she is in no hurry and tells me her biological clock is not ticking!

The only challenges I face are, as with you, increased appetite (thought I have lost 12 lbs in the last year and holding steady), and for me, watching how much I drink, a few drinks and I am blotto! I amd learing to be careful..or quit altogether.

So life is good, surgery changed my life and improved the lives of those that are around me. Yes, life is good. Thank God, too!

My Story

Get your own countUP at BlingyBlob.com

I had worried about my weight my whole life, my dad was heavy (probably never over 180 lbs.).  While in high school I played football and then went on to college, at about 165 lbs.  Then while at school I graduated at about 200 lbs.  Then the weight started going on, 230 lbs within two years then a steady increase, through high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnia, and finally arthritus in the knees, to a whopping 360 lbs, maybe higher!

Every year I took up more room in the Christmas videos.

After the sleep apnia respirator I lost about 20 lbs, then no more.

During a stressful period at work I started playing golf again (after playing since 10 years old.)  I started to do better but had very difficult time without a cart, I could hardly make it around and never on a hilly course.  I came to the ultimate realization that I needed surgery I sent a note to my physician who refered me to the Bariatric Clinic at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.

The time went smoothly from March through my surgery on June 7, 2005.  The program ushered me through the insurance approval very smoothly, I had not problems getting approved through Blue Shield of California.

These are the physical and mental results met so far:

Some of the goals that have been met:

*Ride public transit and have someone else sit next to me.
*Sit comfortably in a restaurant booth.
*Climb a flight of stairs without collapsing totally out of breath.
*Sit comfortably in a stadium, or theater seat.
*Use no seatbelt extenders on an airplane, put the food tray down.
*Purchase clothes at at Brooks Brothers men's store.
*Purchase clothes by style/taste rather then "that's the only thing that will fit me".
*Walk and enjoy 18 holes of golf carrying my own clubs.
*Not be recognized in a meeting or social engagement by people who have known me 20 years.
*Have the energy to do all of the important things in life, like run.
*When my family hugs me, they say, wow I can reach all the way around you!
*Go on vacation and walk everywhere, without pain in feet or knees.
*Be addressed by a sales clerk normally.
*Never go to a big and tall store again!

*Look at a picture of myself and not cringe!
*Be judged on my professionalism or my merit not on my appearance.
*I now have a golf index of 9.1, still want improvement!
*Walk to the top of Vernal Falls!
