Back Home From Having my Surgery. . . WOOT!!!

Dec 13, 2009

I got back home from the hospital yesterday afternoon.  I had the surgery Thursday, Dec. 10 and sailed through it with flying colors. . . well, except for having to spend the first 24 hours in ICU as a precaution due to my severe COPD.  But they were able to remove me from the vent without any problems and my O2 sat stayed up, so I got to go to the surgical ward Friday night.

I sometimes feel like they didn't do anything inside because I haven't really felt any hunger or had that sense of fullness that I expected to have -- or have read that others have.  But I wanted to make sure that I didn't get sick so I've been really following the dietary guidelines for post op.

I'll get to start my Phase III - Modified Full Liquid diet tomorrow and will be on it for the next 10 days until I see the surgeon for my first post-op checkup.  I actually get to add back my Eggbeaters for breakfast and have some cottage cheese for lunch.  Just being able to use a spoon and fork to eat with now will make me feel "normal" again.  LOL!!

It's just hard to get used to NOT feeling hungry like I used to.  I have to constantly MAKE myself get in what I need for my recovery.  I actually got 60g of protein in today.  It just amazes me that I don't really think about food all day long now like I used to.  I would eat even if I wasn't hungry before and I don't now. . . except that I keep a protein drink or Crystal Light drink by my side to sip on and keep hydrated.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was the first BM.  GAWD!!  That was NASTY -- looked just like a baby's first BM . . . greenish black and tarry.  UGH!!  But I was assured that was completely normal.  They're still kinda' loose, but they say that's ok, too  So, I'm NORMAL!!  YAY!!

I'm determined NOT to weigh myself every day -- only on days I go to exercise. . . well, do the treadmill at pulmonary rehab.  hehe  I think that was one of my downfalls on previous dieting attempts.  I would get soooo depressed when I had been "good" and yet, still gain weight periodically, or hit that plateau.  That's another behavior I need to change.

So much for that.  I haven't had any pain, just soreness and that bloated feeling from the gas they pump you up with.  But the more active I am, the more I can expel.  They say that the third day after surgery is the worst, but I haven't really felt bad physically today.  I just still feel kinda' like I'm in a fog.  I guess that's from the anesthesia but I expect that to change in the next couple of days.

We'll see how things go at my checkup on the 21st.  Until then. . . We're on the DOWN side.  LOL!!
