Phase III -- 6 Days Out

Dec 16, 2009

Well, here it is -- 6 days post op.  I have a recipe I concocted today that really helped me get through the day I'm going to share, but first I have some other news.

I have severe COPD -- was diagnosed last year with it.  I've been in pulmonary rehab for it since early March of this year and have made a LOT of progress.  Before the surgery, I had worked my way up to 2.2mph on the treadmill for 30 min and was on the NuStep at Level 10 at 90-100 steps a minute for 20 minutes.

Yesterday, I decided to go back to rehab and get started again -- 5 days post op.  UGH!!  I know -- what was I thinking?!?!?  LOL!!  When we first arrive, we're required to weigh in.  Now -- this was a schock!!  I was already down 5.2 pounds in the first 5 days after surgery!!!  WOOOOOOT!!!

So I start out on the treadmill and actually got up to 2mph and lasted for 15 minutes.  Then, when I transferred over to the NuStep, I lasted 10 minutes at 75 -80 steps per minute.  So, 5 days post op, I was able to start the program back up at about 1/2 of what I was doing last week pre op.  That was just AMAZING to me.  I figured I'd do well to make it 10 minutes on the treadmill.  LOL!!

Now for the recipe -- since you can add back eggs/eggbeaters, thinned instant potatoes and cottage cheese on Phase III, that helped a little getting a break from the liquids and soups, but I still felt like I was missing something.  I just needed something I could "sink my teeth into". :p

Anyway, I made a single serving of Instant potatoes in the microwave.  When they were done, I added a couple of tablespoons of 1% milk, a tablespoon of eggbeaters, a dash of butter buds, salt and pepper and a sprinkle of LF shredded cheddar and mixed it all up and threw it into a teflon skllet with a spray of Pam. and spread it out.

OMG!!!  That did the trick.  Even though you end up with this nice brown "crust" on both sides, it's still thinned enough to go down into the new pouch without any discomfort.  It took about 1/2 hour to eat it all, but just using that fork and the eye appeal of a browned "crust" was just what the doctor ordered.  I was in heaven!!!

I'm going back to rehab tomorrow to continue my progress towards where I ended up pre op -- and even beyond.  I'm sooooo hoping that as the weight continues to come off, it will get easier to breathe and increase my physical endurance.

I see the surgeon next Monday, so that will be my next update.  Later. . .
