dumping syndrome - definition (mayo clinic).....

Feb 09, 2012

Dumping syndrome is a group of symptoms most likely to develop if you've had surgery to remove all or part of your stomach, or if your stomach has been surgically bypassed to help lose weight. Also called rapid gastric emptying, dumping syndrome occurs when the undigested contents of your stomach are transported or "dumped" into your small intestine too rapidly. Common symptoms include abdominal cramps and nausea.

Most people with dumping syndrome experience symptoms soon after eating. In others, symptoms may occur one to three hours after eating. In either case, symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Dumping syndrome often improves on its own without medical treatment or after adjusting your diet. In more-serious cases of dumping syndrome, you may need medication or surgery.

3 month check-up @ TWH....Feb 2/12

Feb 06, 2012

Although a few day's late in writing this, I had my 3 month check up @ TWH last Thursday.

My first meeting was with the nurse - my weight was down 52.2 pounds since the first meeting at the hospital.  She seemed pleased with the results (as was I).  We reviewed any questions I had and although I had completed my blood work over 3 weeks ago, she couldn't find the results.  We discussed taking a natural anti-inflammatory (left shoulder pain) and she recommended that I NOT take it due to the possibility of my blood thinning and stomach ulcers.  We also discussed the increase of headaches (over the last few weeks); she noted this could be caused by a lack of water/lack of protein/lack of carbs or a combination of factors.  My blood pressure was down and overall the 30 minute meeting went well.

The second meeting of the day was with the dietician - we reviewed my food intake and I discussed my recent difficulties with vomiting/upset stomach.  She suggested I discontinue eating all pasta/"SMART ONE" dinners, I return to eating with baby utensils to slow down my eating", I increase my protein intake and I increase my water intake.  During my meeting with the dietician, the nurse found my blood work results - all levels are fine except my levels of vit. D - the dietician recommended I add this supplement to my daily vitamin.  We also reviewed alternative types of protein as I continue to have difficulty eating chicken, turkey, steak and pork.

The third meeting was with the social worker - we reviewed how I was handling the emotional eating and how I have lost my "best friend" through this WLS.  We discussed how I am bored @ home, my job search process and my lack of structure/exercise.  She recommended that I try and increase my socializing to 1 x weekly rather than 1 x every 3 weeks.  We discussed my body image and that I should write a letter to myself ("why I had this surgery") to keep myself on track should I feel like cheating.  In addition, we discussed how successful I feel I will be (I gave myself a 98%) in this surgery.

My 6 month f/up is scheduled for May 2/12...
