Follow-Up Visit Outcomes

Mar 02, 2011

Well, they didn’t take my blood pressure and my body comp wasn’t what I thought it would be. With my exercise, weight-lifting and getting my protein in, I was pretty sure my body comp ratio would be pretty good. Wrong! I did lose some muscle mass and the physical therapist feels it’s because of the jogging and intensity of workouts. I’m not taking in enough calories to compensate for this so the body goes for muscle which is easier than taking it from fat. It’s not a bad comp ratio, but a couple points from being “on the right track”. So, I’m encouraged to do moderate exercise (be able to talk but not sing) 5-7 days per week versus intense exercise 3-4 days per week plus weight-lifting. I’m fine with backtracking to moderate exercise. It’s the trying to do it 5-7 days per week, but it needs to be done.

The nutritionist appointment went fine and I’m encouraged to start adding some more fiber. I’ve avoided breads/grains for the most part in attempt to get protein in and avoid the bread swelling in my tummy. So, the last two mornings I have had oatmeal which has been a nice change and it certainly stays with me all morning. I’ve also been trying to keep calories between 800-1000, but the nutritionist says I can progress more towards the 1000-1100 range.

I also met with the psychologist who tends to like to talk more about exercise than anything else as he’s a WLS patient who had the lap band. I’d prefer he keep it to the psych subject as he was telling me I need to have as intense as possible exercise sessions which conflicts with the PT recommendations. We did go over some psych stuff and I’m not really having too many issues. I thought I would have more, but so far so good.

I’m supposed to follow-up again in three months though I may want to see PT sooner for a body comp update. I’d have to pay for it though. In fact, at this point, I’m paying for any visits other than the nutritionist and surgeon’s office. I don’t mind too much if it ensures the best outcome.
