Surgeon Testimonial

David Podkameni M.D.
My first impression of Dr Podkameni was that he was very knowledgable & experienced. Over time, I found him to be strict but communicated very welll with me, and I could even joke with him some. Some members of his staff have had bariatric surgery (nurses & the dietician, Donna) so they know what they are talking about because they have lived it.

I found it odd that he didn't care about taking labs since it was June when I had pre op labs but my surgery didn't happen until November. Also, I found him to be overly structured and strict at times, but I am a person who likes to test limits...lol

There is a lot of support with the Banner Gateway Bariatric program, ranging from pre op to post op support groups. They even have a clothing exchange program!

The thing that I am most impressed with Dr P is that he is thorough, methodical, and careful with his patients. During my surgery, he found a benign tumor on my liver, and repaired a hiatal hernia I didn't even know I had! Afterwards, when I had some nausea, dry heaves, and a bad rebound headache (probably from the pain meds), he gave a combination of meds thru the IV that took care of all three problems. That made the difference in me having to stay an extra day or not. (I got to go home as scheduled.)

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I felt like I was weak and couldn't lose weight because I wasn't disciplined enough. I had accepted that I would be a "big girl" for the rest of my life. It took several years to get there but I never felt picked on...just didn't have any energy...and I don't think I realized how much more I was eating than "normal" people. I always felt hungry...

Made Goal...and Juicing Experiments
posted on 4/1/12 1:26 am
This week, my scale marked a historic victory....I made my ultimate goal of 160.  (Not that I have been actively pursuing this goal, as I have been happy in the low 160's, and my docs said "don't lose anymore".)  None the less, it feels good to finally hit this number.  (Now I am wondering how to maintain it...as in, stop losing...)  I am shoveling food in my mouth as much as I can but I may try upping my calories to 1600 now... Considering that I have been on a diet most of my life, how ironic that I now look for ways to add calories...and feel like I eat constantly...  Still, its a nice problem to have... (Next year, who knows...I may actually have to lower my calories if my nausea problems ever go away...)

In my quest to "eat" more good stuff, I have a new juicer in my house. My older daughter actually bought it, but we all seem to use it.  I bought in fruit the other day just to feed the juicer's big appetite.  My favorite recipe so far uses strawberries, mango, pineapple, and lemon.  You put about 4 cups of fruit in...and out comes 1 cup of juice.  That works for Sleevie!  (Although, it's a little on the strong side for my acid sensitive stomach, so I add ice...and even water to dilute it.)  Since I can't drink straight water very well, I find myself diluting most of my drinks to satisfy my water urges.  (I really miss the days when I could guzzle water straight from my 64 oz water bottle...now it's just an ocean coming back up if I try that.)

What's interesting to learn about juicing is which fruits you leave skins and/or leaves on, and which ones you shouldn't.  I left strawberry leaves in today's concoction, which adds nutrition in this case, but the drink has a leafy taste to it.  (I probably won't do that again.)  And I am not ready to try juicing the leafy greens yet...too scary... So it's just fruits for now... In fact, if anyone knows of a simple "kindergartener friendly" veggie juice recipe to try...I will see if I can muster up the courage to try it.  I think if I can make some kind of soup (with spices and maybe some meat and or beans in it), I can do this... Hmm...maybe that defeats the purpose of juicing? Idk

And for the record...yes, I know I am picky! lol  I have a hard time wrapping my head around the mixing of fruits and veggies into one drink...have never been a fan of that.  Sure, I know that technically tomatoes and avocados are fruits...and I use them a lot with meats and veggies...but I am talking about apples mixed with kale...just doesn't sound appetizing...and Sleevie makes most of the eating decisions for me...although I hold him down to take his meds, vitamins, and supplements.  (Sleevie is just a petulant child who doesn't know what he wants half the time...Thank goodness my other children are all but grown!)

On a side note, I find I am making daily stops at Starbucks lately...I have been working a lot and those Venti Iced Chai Lattes give me 330 calories and 10 grams of protein in 24 oz.  Trying to get 1400 - 1600 calories now is a struggle so this helps me get there... and Chikfila chicken nuggets are a Godsend too... I can eat 3 - 4 for a meal, so a 12 pack lasts 3 meals or so!  12 nuggets has 42 grams of protein and 400 calories...(I cannot vouch for other places nuggets however.)  Has anyone tried their new Chicken Tortilla Soup?  If it's not spicy, I think I will try it soon!  (And for those of you without Chikfila, I am truly sorry...lol)

As heartburn just knocked on Sleevie's door, and nausea won't be far behind, I will wrap this blog up...(Hmmm, I haven't had a chicken wrap in a long time...might have to do that soon.)
